Wayyyyyyyy too much - we bought a TempurPedic Cloud Supreme or whatever those things are called. That thing is the shiz!!!!! I highly recommend it, although I was slightly freaked out at the beginning of how little I loved it. Now you could not pry it out of my cold, dead hands.
We got a king size mattress and boxspring for about $1800 (I think). It was from Jordan's furniture. I think it is a serta (like a pillowtop ultra or something). The store we went to uses the heat/pressure map where you lay on this mattress thing and it shows you where your pressure points are (which supposedly helps you pick the kind of firmness you need once you figure out the position you sleep in the most). We love it, and I plan on having it for at least 15 years. I bought another mattress from them in 2004 that is still in great shape.
We got a Serta iComfort queen in February. We splurged for the adjustable base and I think it was $3500 all together. I think the base was about half that. We didn't intend on spending that much, but we love the bed and got 0% for 5 years on the store credit card.

We spent under $1K at Costco, we love our mattress. But we have sleep number loving friends who would not think of getting anything but. I am super happy with my mattress and think costco would not sell poor quality.
I think for the whole bundle we paid $700, but it was all on sale last Memorial Day or 4th of July weekend. It really depends what quality of stuff you want. We got a middle of the road one because when we buy a new house, we plan to have a bigger bedroom and therefore a king size bed instead of a queen. You can make it as cheap or expensive as you want, really. We went to Denver Mattress and it was a great experience.
