I have an '01 and it's not bad. I don't love it, gas mileage isn't wonderful, but it's been reliable. Maintenance is easy and relatively cheap because parts are really easy to find and we've been able to do most of the work ourselves.
Are they going to be in school together or is this for them just while at home? Is this because you'd like to wrap youngest son in bubble wrap given his history?

I have a 2004, and it has constantly had issues. It was originally my dads, and we have both taken awesome care of it. I think mine is a lemon, so I'm probably not the best/most unbiased source for info.

We have a 2005. It is a jerk. The check engine light is always on. We get one thing fixed and somejthing else goes. We have also had o have the transmission fixed/overhauled or whatever they had to do to get the stupid thing to actually drive when you pressed the gas pedal.

We have a 2000 and it has withstood some serious toddler shenanigans and road trips. I have no complaints aside from gas mileage, but I knew what I was getting into.
I have a 99. While I love it because it sits up high so I can see in traffic and it can fit all kinds of crap in the back, we have had ongoing transmission and wiring issues for the last 3 years. It is now to the point where I am now looking for a new SUV/crossover because I am just over always seeing that damn "check engine light" coming on. To get everything fixed will cost pretty much the value of the cart this point.
Donnie Durango (I always name my vehicle) has only about 85K miles so it isn't because it has too many miles. It belonged to my parents and they meticulously maintained it and we have kept that up in the 5 years that we have owned it.
We had a 98 and loved it. The Beast handled so well on snow and ice. We only sold it because we moved from MI to CA and didn't want to transport a 14 year old vehicle with bad gas mileage.
