How to deal with hard water? very high in iron. I hate the smell and it's ruining my hair styling process. Any advice? Do we need to install a filtration unit for the whole house? Cost?
Hard water can leave rust colored stains on light colored clothing. To get rid of rust on washable fabric, coat the rust spots with lemon juice, sprinkle the spots with salt and let the clothes sit for a day. The chemical reaction will lift the stain. Wash as normal.

I'm sure water softeners have come a long way since I was a kid, but I grew up with hard (well) water. We had a softener which helped, but it still smelled and tasted weird. And it made our white plates a dingy yellow color. We used a brita water pitcher in the fridge which definitely helped with both the taste and smell (although of course only for drinking water - it still smelled bad in the shower). So I would look into both a water softener and a filtration system.
Yeah, I live in the land of hardwater. Water softener is the only way around it. It's not only hard on your stuff, but it'll corrode your pipes, wreck your dishwasher and other things as well.
Our water softener was like $800.00 and it's the best money spent (although it's not even a choice here, everyone has one).
Where's Fox? You want your water tested for hardness scale too. Softeners require different things depending on your exact issue.

We're considering getting a softener, too. I'm coastal NC, and our hard water is drying our skin/hair out. My son as eczema, and I haven't been able to get his flare ups under control since moving into our new house (almost 3 weeks ago).
