Half dome is amazing! I went with my sister last summer. I was in shape but did no special training. Actually bought new hiking boots right before and maybe hiked 4 miles in them before going. Just bring gloves for the cables! And don't look down as you are going up!

I've hiked Half Dome. It's a beautiful hike. I don't remember doing any special training for it. I did it several years ago, and I don't think we needed to get a permit months in advance like you do now.
Others may disagree, but I think your shoes will be fine. I am guessing that you won't be carrying a huge pack. The ankle support seems more important to me when carrying a heavy pack.
I used hiking shoes. I hate having the extra ankle support. The whole permit thing. We didn't get it the first time. The reserve a few, I can't remember the number, for last minute. I applied again on our way out there and got in the day before we hiked. If you are spending at least a couple days out there, don't get too discouraged right away!

I wore my hiking boots, but they're not super hardcore boots. I think good supportive shoes would be fine. It's strenuous, but not insanely so... I mean there are definitely some uphill switchbacks, but also plenty of flat stretches. The last bit with the cables is scary if you're afraid of heights.
You pass some really beautiful falls on the way up, at least in the spring when they're running. I love Yosemite!
