It is to check the condition of the muscle between the vagina and rectum.
Is this a concern for most people?
I have never had this happen, but now I'm scared because of this board. What could possibly be wrong with the muscle between my vagina and rectum?
So what if the condition of my muscle is not up to expectations, are they going to give me a series of exercises I must go through for 15 minutes everyday to strengthen it? Sorry doc, you gotta take me to dinner before you get to finger my bum.
Even though I see my gyno every year, she still says "now you'll feel pressure from the speculum. Now a pinch from the sample. I expect you'll have cramping bc you spotted when I took the sample." Then at breast exam, "I'm going to feel all around each breast all over." She's never stuck her finger up my rear but I fully expect she would tell me like A PROFESSIONAL! Especially if her procedure changed! (I also get severe anal fissures so maybe she doesn't do it knowing she could cause that to worsen?!)
To answer your question, ask the doc to explain every single thing as they are doing it and why. They shouldn't mind one bit.
This is how mine is. Then she's like, so, how about that sale at Boscov's? while she's up in my business. And I'm like, uh, yeah, no lady. I would just ask for a warning. Don't be shy!

Huh. Honestly, I'd rather her just kind of go for it. Knowing it was coming would likely make me "clench" a bit which surely would make it more uncomfortable.

1. Mine has always done it, but warned me first. He just retired and I will now be going to a midwife so maybe she will be different?
2. Short story, my rectum was involved in the delivery of 3rd child. Thank god that was the one I'd had an epidural for.
Longer story: I knew she was stuck and had something wrong, and that there was sort of a lot involved with actually getting her out. My mom had indicated it was dangerous, but she overreacts. The day after she was born, the nurse asked me about my pain and I explained that the pain was not where it was expected to be (it was my ass, which made sitting up feel pretty bad while nursing.) She was the same nurse that had been involved with the delivery. I said "It's like I delivered out of my butt." She said "Well, you sorta did."
I looked up what she had, which I now need to look up again bc I can't remember, but she was stuck behind my pubic bone. One of the interventions is to stick his hand up my rear and push her shoulder over the bone, which is what happened.
Ow.
This is what she had going on. There is a sequential list of stuff to try to get her out and it has to be done super fast so the baby lives. Shoulder dystocia is a specific case of dystocia whereby after the delivery of the head, the anterior shoulder of the infant cannot pass below the pubic symphysis, or requires significant manipulation to pass below the pubic symphysis. It is diagnosed when the shoulders fail to deliver shortly after the fetal head. In shoulder dystocia, it is the chin that presses against the walls of the perineum. Shoulder dystocia is an obstetric emergency, and fetal demise can occur if the infant is not delivered, due to compression of the umbilical cord within the birth canal.[1]
I've been in a lot of deliveries and never seen anything go up the ass lol! With shoulder dystocia, they always push from above the pelvis. Thank y'all for this warning in case I ever do see it. I have seen an open go elbow deep up a vagina to try to turn a vertex twin B. His gown and glove was blood soaked up to his elbow. I hope they gave her some damn good pain meds.
My dr shoved his finger up my ass during delivery to help get Ollie out- and even in the middle of all that craziness I was like, "FUCKING NOOOOPE!"
I can't imagine what I'd do if that happened during my regular exam.
How on earth does this help? Like you're so freaked you push extra hard? I might have to make a birth plan for next time just so I can write "no ass business."
I'm really late but still wanted to answer. He hooked his fingers around under Ollie's head so he could push him out from the inside. I'm pretty sure my butt was fisted. Ollie was a big baby and hard to get out. Totally got him back by pooping on his shoe though.
This is one reason why I'm like, "Ehhhh... I can wait a while for the next one!"

I thought rectal exams during a pelvic/PAP test were common. I've had mine probed during many an exam over the years. It's uncomfortable but like the speculum thing and the cervix scraping (which is quite painful for me), it needs to be done for good health.
Yep. I've been getting exams for almost two decades (ack) from three different offices in three different states and I can't remember when I didn't get a probe. (Not to say that I always have but I've been getting them so long I can't remember not.)
I was always told ahead of time though and it's honestly so quick.
You should certainly be talked through whatever procedure you have.
And you can ask ahead of time whether the doctor will be doing a rectovaginal exam. There is some controversy around whether the basic bimanual exam has much value.
A rectovaginal exam gives the clinician more information, especially if the patient is overweight, has fibroids, endometriosis or is "older" and at greater risk of ovarian CA.
