How should I approach this with the gynecologist?

It's my first time at this practice...fun fact, it's the clinic at which I volunteer.  And I do NOT want a repeat performance of that one time I went and the gyn fingered my bunghole without warning.  That was not cool.

Do I just say, "Hey, I don't know if you're the kind of doctor who likes to get the asshole in on the action, but if you are, can you let me know now while I'm clothed so I can just leave with some dignity?"

My dr shoved his finger up my ass during delivery to help get Ollie out- and even in the middle of all that craziness I was like, "FUCKING NOOOOPE!"

I can't imagine what I'd do if that happened during my regular exam.

It is to check the condition of the muscle between the vagina and rectum.

Is this a concern for most people?

I have never had this happen, but now I'm scared because of this board. What could possibly be wrong with the muscle between my vagina and rectum?

I only had it done when I went to another specialist re endometriosis. And they warned me. It was still horrible.

Seems like if you've had a check like that they shouldn't have to do it for eons after unless you have pain??

I thought rectal exams during a pelvic/PAP test were common. I've had mine probed during many an exam over the years. It's uncomfortable but like the speculum thing and the cervix scraping (which is quite painful for me), it needs to be done for good health.

I would specifically say "if it is your practice to perform a rectal exam I would like to opt-out of that portion of the exam. Is there a waiver I may sign?"

This is what I did after the first time I read about this happening on ML.

I actually had an exam a couple weeks ago and my doctor did this. Apparently it is easier to feel the ovaries that way. (I hadn't had a period for 4 months and she wanted to make sure she couldn't feel any masses.)

I've gotten my ass fingered but only since having my last child and that is because I had a 4th degree tear and some issues following. Otherwise never had it done.

As someone whose reproductive organs were all cattywompus her entire life, I've always had the rectal exam.  It can help the doc to palpate things that aren't in the right place.

And every gyno I've been to has told me before the rectal--not a single one was a surprise.

I set my mind to refusing to be embarrassed at the gyno. It's really not the place to be shy, and I really do believe they have seen and heard it all. I just let my thoughts fly out like a crazy lady.

Put a piece of clear tape across your butthole. That will mess with them. Thought you were gonna stick in there didya? NOPE!

In all seriousness, its pretty routine now. Its a quick 5 second thing. Ask the doc to warn you before it happens maybe? Not that that helps me, I always end up clenching like a Chinese finger trap.

It's called a digital rectal exam. I've been to several gyno's and some have done it, some have not. It's to check for masses etc.

Just ask if they do the DRE or rectal exam and decline.
