He started off sitting. Then when summer hit we had to teach him to pee outside (gross, but true! You gotta go when you gotta go at that age, park with no bathrooms included!) and that taught him to pee standing up.

We taught Dylan to sit and point down. He isn't tall enough to be able to pee standing up in our toilet yet. And honestly I don't know if his penis is big enough yet that he would be able to aim properly. But I know nothing about those things.
The 2 boys I potty trained we did standing up from the start with Cheerios in the toilet for aim. One of them refused pooping in the potty for a while and would only poop in his little potty, but he would pee in the big one first. They had older brothers though so they had the right idea from the beginning.
I've had experience helping boys at 2.5 pee standing up. They all did fine. But, that was at the daycare center, and they started potty training at 2, and then, the boys sat. So, I will probably introduce him sitting, but not for long. Then he'll stand. I'll get a stool if he's not tall enough (which is a joke, he's a giant), and he wont need to aim - if you're pushed up close enough to the toilet and lean forward it will go in. Then I'll probably use cheerios in the toilet to help teach him to aim when he's at that point
My DH talked about his parents putting the Cheerios in the toilet to the point where I had to tell him never to bring it up again bc it's kind of really really gross to me.
Sitting at first when he was 2, now we are working on standing at 2.5. He watches daddy and wants to pee like him and "make bubbles" in the water. We have a stool for him to stand on.

Basically this. When they sit to poop, make sure you teach them to push their penis down or pee will spray everywhere!!! That is always fun.
Kalvin just had his parent teacher conference and said that since he likes to pee standing up in the bathtub to try and get him to hold the back of the toilet and pee over the toilet and basically hope for the best. We have a stool to help get him taller.
Sitting first with their legs closed so they don't per all over the place and once they master that they will most likely want to stand. We have to remind him where to pee so it is not all over the place occassionally.
At DD's daycare, they had the boys lean over the toilet, with their hands on the back, so they didn't have to aim. Of course, they had a little toilet, but I thought that was an interesting idea.
I'm going to leave it up to DH to decide how to show DS what to do.

We did sitting first, since he had to master that for pooping anyhow. Now he stands unless we are out somewhere where they have tall toilets and then he will sit.

Most of the trainer toilets have reversible seats for boys/girls. The boy side has a guard to keep the pee going in the right direction. Micah has stood to pee in the tub every night this week. We might start that way. Who knows. I would say it's up to MH, but I know he'll just ask my opinion and go with that.
My boys were taught to pee by sitting on the toilet backwards. Once they mastered that, then they were taught to stand up and lean forward and hold the back of the toilet. Much less opportunity to miss since they were aimed right at it.

ETA: I did not do the teaching. I just followed daycare's lead.
I don't want to quit working until all the boys are potty trained.
