Did anyone follow the story of the mom who was drunk and high and drove the wrong way on the Taconic Parkway? She crashed her car and killed 8 people - herself, her daughter, her 3 nieces and 3 men in another car. Her son survived. There was also an HBO documentary about it called There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane. The story was so, so devastating.
Anyway, the mother of the nieces who passed away in the crash wrote a book and just spoke out for the first time. She had another baby. This makes me really happy for her and thankful that she's healing. I felt/feel really affected by this story for some reason. It's hard to get your head around.

I've heard about that story, but didn't hear about her new baby (or I forgot). It's a very sad story. I worked with a couple of kids who's mother was driving high down the wrong side of a major interstate. She killed her 4 kids but survived. Her other two kids weren't with her. Not only did they have to deal with the loss of their young siblings, but also a confusing loss of their mother who "survived" but was locked away. I was working one-on-one with the older of the two, and out of nowhere said, "I just want to see my brother again." Heartbreaking.
The Hance's are actually really good friends with my SIL. Jacky and the girls made cupcakes for my wedding shower. They were such sweet kids. Baby Kasey looks so much like her sisters did.
Diane would drink like one drink at dinner parties. None of them in that group did any drugs. Its just so weird. I really wish we knew what happened at the campsite.
I saw that documentary- so insanely sad and strange. I read somewhere that she released a memoir, and I'm happy for her and her husband that they are healing and brought another child into the world who obviously will be loved beyond words.

Well, I know the husband claimed she didn't drink or do drugs (katfco - yes, that's the story you are thinking of.) And they wanted to figure out if there was something more going on. I really want to believe there is something more there because I can't understand why a mother would do that.
Fryjack, do you know any more information? Did they figure out if she did have a stroke or if the tooth issue was the culprit? How is Brian doing these days? And Diane's husband?
No stroke. She was drunk and had pot in her system. The Hance's dont speak to Diane's husband. He is shady. Wouldnt cooperate with the investigation, wouldnt let Brian speak either. He sued the Hance's (!!!!) saying that their mini van was faulty (Diane was driving their van)
There are a lot of theories about what happened. I don't think she was trying to kill her nieces. I don't know why she got drunk and drove. I think Dan knows something he's not sharing.

It's heartbreaking.
It is heartbreaking, from every angle. I choose to believe she wasn't in her right mind because I can't imagine any mother putting herself and her kids/nieces in danger like that. So, if it wasn't a physical issue, it was a mental issue.
I really am glad about Jacky's new baby and I am definitely going to read her book.
This stuff is so heart wrenching. 5 teenagers from our city were just killed in a crash. The patents and families, ughh : - (.
I just read about that and thought of you. So heartbreaking. This is one of my biggest fears for my children. I am so afraid of them making poor decisions and thinking it is cool to drive really fast and staying int he car with someone else who does. Terrifying.
Yes, I told DH "Our girls have to be smarter than this!". But driving around at 100+mph seems cool I guess or asking to get out makes you seem not cool. Makes me angry.

Wow I can't believe you know them. My first thought when I read the article was that the husband must have done something to her and she had to get away. Do you know if they were on bad terms? Fighting maybe? I wish there were some answers for that family.

I don't really know them, SIL does. I don't know much more, or feel comfortable sharing much more than what I wrote. I really wish there was some answer too. Even if it was some awful reason because then at least there is a reason, you know?
