Here is the accent wall in my loft, which we use as a family room (with the seller's stuff - all we really have right now is a brown sofa and some wood furniture that is pretty much the same color as the coffee table in the photo). I know the orange isn't everyone's cup of tea, but we like it and it's staying for now.
The other walls are bright white, and I'd like to paint them. A sort of neutral beige seems like obvious choice, but the issue is that we have a warm beige downstairs that has some pink undertones, and I would need to carry the upstairs color down the stairs, where it would meet with the downstairs color, and I think two beiges meeting at a corner would look weird. I don't really want to use the downstairs color in the loft because I think it would clash with the accent wall.
If you like contrast, what about a paler version of the blue-green in the rug. A pale blue green will really stand out against the rich orange. If you don't like contrast, how about a deeper brown in between the beige from downstairs and the chocolate sofa. I am thinking of the color of coffee when cream is added to it.
Hmmm, I never would have thought of a blue-green, but I just google some pictures and it looks gorgeous when done right. I'm not sure if I'm that brave though...
You have already got the inspiration piece (your rug) and the grounding component (chocolate brown couch). Pairing the right shade of blue green against that orange will elevate your existing pieces---a lot of punch for the cost of paint.

I did BM Moonshine (kind of greyish blue, but looks more blue on the walls) and it looks really great. I have an orangish color accent wall above the moonshine painted walls and did a lot of orange accents in there. It also meets a wall to a different room that is creme and it all works well together.
I just bought a sample of BM Palladian Blue and I think I love it! Like I just want to go paint my entire house Palladian Blue right now lol. I'll update with a pic when I'm done, but it might be a couple weeks--top priority is stripping the wallpaper in the master bedroom, texturing, and painting. Ugh, so much to do.
