My babysitter's mom posted this on FB: "I need to learn more about home schooling. Apparently Arkansa's K12 program only goes to 8th grade. My daughter is going into 9th."
I realize this might make me seem dumb, but I didn't know that K12 was a program. I thought it was just a term that referred to the school years kindergarten through 12th grade.
Is this something I should be concerned about regarding DS's (currently 2 years old) future education? Can someone educate me about what this means? I don't want to ask her because, well, look at how she spelled Arkansas.
Update: I asked the mom if something happened and she responded that she's tired of the cliques.
Ummmm, it's high school? I'm not going to say anything because not my kid and all that, but it's hard not to.
Ummmm. K12=Kindergarten through 12th grade. What in the world is she talking about? Only goes to 8th grade? Is she saying that middle school is over and needs to find a high school? Or is she thinking that the state does not require high school? That just seems like a moronic post.

We definitely have a high school and as far as I knew, our babysitter was all set and ready to start going this fall. I thought maybe I was missing something?

See, I don't know what she means. Her daughter has been enrolled in public school since they moved here two years ago. She was attending school at the middle school and just finished 8th grade and is/was(?) going into 9th at the high school this fall.

Thanks for the input, I'm feeling less crazy now.
She's easily influenced and has gotten some nutty ideas from some of the backwoods rednecks she meets at swap meets and this is probably just another one of those ideas.

Okay, so I was slightly mistaken about our school system. I went to school in Florida and assumed that elementary was K-5, middle was 6-8, and high was 9-12 here as well.
It's not. Elementary is K-4, middle is 5-6, junior high is 7-9, and high is 10-12. I guess it has something to do with building space, but whatever. So babysitter still has one more year in junior high before high school. BUT STILL I don't get WTF her mom is talking about. *shrugs*
K12 is the name of a company that offers a type of cyberschool. States can sign up and use their software to run a virtual public school (kid is at home, but is still a public school student). In this scenario, a (state-paid) teacher oversees all the work, etc.
K12 can also be used independently by families. I'm not certain about all the details.
I do know also that some districts are only K-8. When applying for jobs as a HS teacher, many of the smaller, suburban districts only went through junior high, then the kids had to go to a larger consolidated high school in another city. So it's possible the school system/district her daughter has been attending ends technically at 8th grade and she will need to go to a different town for HS. Maybe?

We're in a rural town and the high school is right here in town.
I'm thinking that they're all of a sudden considering homeschooling for some reason, but she's looking for something other than that K12.com program since it only goes through 8th grade in our state. I guess I'm going to have to ask her why she doesn't like the high school. According to the research I did before we moved out here we have pretty good schools so I'm baffled.
Maybe she was wanting to swap over to homeschooling for high school for some reason? And the program she wanted only goes up to 8th?
This is what I think. She wants to pull her kid from public school and is pointing out that she will have to home school rather than use the K12 online program.
Idk, it's possible that her kid is having a particularly hard time with clothed kids or something. I'm not a big fan of home schooling, but can't say that I'd never consider it. If my kid was being picked on terribly and I had no other good options, I might consider it. A friend of mine considered it with her special needs daughter as she was having a hell of a time with her public school. Maybe the mom just gave you a vague answer, but it's deeper than just not liking cliques. I have a feeling that there is more to it.
