So I got this big frame today. I'm planning to use it over the mantle with a B&W photo. The frame is kind of a pewter color, so I'm inclined to pick a bright color for the photo mat.
What colors would you suggest? I want orange, I think but I feel like that's the wrong answer.
If you want the picture to stand out, use a black or a white mat. If you want the picture to blend with a room, use a color that coordinates with your room, like the orange.

that's a good point about standing out vs blending with the room. I think I would rather coordinate with the room. I feel like blue is the right answer- everyone likes blue. But I still like orange, so since I at least got one vote of approval on that I may go with it.
I like the idea of orange. I think it will actually stand out, but not in the same way that blue would. I think the blue might stand out too much and be more of a focus than the picture, since it is a complementary color to the fireplace area, where the orange is more of an analogous color to the brick. I like the idea of blue accents in smaller doses, like in the rug.
So I went ahead and spray painted the mat. If I had more choices I probably would have gone with a stronger orange, but I think this is actually perfect. I need to replace the picture because it's a winter scene of the dog in the snow. I just put it in there for now and H said he's enjoying it so I'll leave it for a little while.
Sorry for night pictures. I'm pretty stoked about it.
Looks good! And if it makes you feel better we have a picture of the church we got married in that was taken in the winter. My sister took it, I love it, I don't have the heart to put it away because it's June!
