If it fits properly, it will touch. It may not be completely flat, but for the most part it should sit close to the skin. You may need to go up a few cup sizes to get the correct fit.
The bottom part touches, but the top doesn't. I couldn't go any larger in the cup size- I actually have a bra that is a cup size larger, and its massive on me.
I do have bras that fit that way and they are the most flattering I own. (I'm about G cup give or take). Getting that perfect fit is a combination of the proper band and proper cup. So you might need more band, more cup or have to look for brands that run full or run small etc.
My other bras don't quit fit right but I'm putting off replacing them since I'm trying to drop some weight.
ETA: if you're wearing a D or DD you might need to branch out to a new bra place. A lot of regular stores (VS, JCP, etc) only carry bras in that cup range which is how folks end up in this situation (feels like there is not other option). In reality you can buy a bra though size 52I cup I believe. You need to find a small local store for a proper fit and then you can order online from that point on. You might find that something like a 32G is the best option if even you never though you were that big
Go get fitted. I'm "older" and was never fitted until a few years ago. It was an amazing difference. I really like The Fitting Touch stores, if you have one near you. A really good bra will run $70.00 up., but they are so worth it.

I got fit by one of those "bra ladies" a few weeks ago. It was pretty amazing. I normally buy a 38C and she fit me in a 36F. I looked/felt at least 10-15lbs thinner. It wasn't in the budget to pay $60+ for a bra at the time, but I think I will buy two this summer. I am trying to get my mom to host a party and get some freebies for herself.

I'm in the neighborhood of an F or full F. What brand did you end up liking the best?
Panache, Anita, Goddess, Elomi, Chantelle, Freya, Fantasie are all worth considering.
I like Fantasie a lot but it all really depends on your body and what you need. (support, sexy, no lines etc).

Wow! That isn't at all the same.
Nope! I actually was fit at a 38 C many moons ago, but I've lost weight/gained weight/lost weight and had a baby in that time frame. Also, she did note that all manufacturers make bras differently. She was also very skilled on how to put a bra on and the art of scooping up and placing the girls once the bra is on.
I had no idea that the gore (and until now, I had no idea that was what it's called) was supposed to touch my sternum and that my cup size was way off. Getting properly-fitting bras was a total wow moment for me (and unfortunately, for my wallet too...). I think mine are mostly Fantasies and Chantelles.
I am having GTG flashbacks right now. papie @booby
YES, everybody, keep trying band/cup & BRAND combinations. Different makes obviously have different cuts.
I recently discovered the plus size store (chain) sell bras in bigger than DD cups. This makes it easier to find combinations that might work for busty gals in reasonable price points. I'm headed there tomorrow to get a bra for this wedding I'm in this weekend. No saggy nursing bra for me!

I had no idea that piece was called a gore, but yes mine touches. I will say getting a professional fitting was one of the best things I did. My band size was way too big, and going to a smaller size has made a huge difference.

I recently saw that bra fitting video that was fl oating around here and it changed my life. I am a 34F (now) and my bra fits properly with the gore touching. I had to try on a lot of bras to get the perfect fit. I got mine from nordstrom rack and one 34ddd bra fit me from vs.
