Currently our kitchen is open to a dining area and living room. There isn't an island, but its large. Its like a corner kitchen.
Anyway, I'd like to change the lighting in there. I'd really like to hang a chandelier type light in the middle of the kitchen, but it wouldn't be hanging over anything. Is that weird?
Most pictures I see the chandelier type light is hanging over an island in the kitchen.
I wouldn't hang a chandelier right there because I'd be worried that someone would bang their head on it. Unless the ceiling is really high, I think it needs to be over a table or an island. But you can get some really nice looking lighting that mounts flush or semi flush to the ceiling that will look nice and dramatic.
Thanks! Its so hard to picture what it would look like. I guess I could just try to find some cool lights to hang over the bar area. It just needs more light.
I wish there was some program where you could upload a picture of your current space and change things around to see what it would look like. Like change the cabinet color, add a backsplash, etc. before you actually did it!
I liked the IKEA kitchen builder program. It has its quirks and limitations, but did help me visualize a kitchen remodel and play around with different ways of setting up the space. I'm pretty sure you can find it on their website.
You mention there isn't an island but it's large...is there room for one? They're not that expensive to build if you would be interested in adding one. My aunt and uncle mocked it out in painters tape on the floor before installing one to make sure that there was enough space and they wouldn't constantly be walking into things with one.

I love planning that sort of thing
Unfortunately the layout doesn't allow for one. I wish there was though! If we did do one (which I thought out) the placement of the fridge and the pantry door that has to open, would mean the island would have to be pretty small. I really want one!
