Did you take them when they had an active infection or not? DS is battling strep for the sixth time, so we finally got a consult. I figured it would take a few weeks to get an appt since it's a specialist, but they had a last minute cancellation for today. I remember his Pedi making some remark on checking them after this round of antibiotics, but I'm not clear on if she meant the ENT.
I had my tonsils taken out when I was 21. This was after 50-60 cases of strep. When I saw him, I was five days in to my ten day prescription of antibiotics. We discussed draining my tonsils then and there for some relief, but ultimately just decided to have my tonsils taken out.
Adult tonsillectomy is like, the absofuckinglutely worst thing ever. I'd take the specialist appt and run with it.

That's awful! This is why I want to get this resolved now. He's 4, so recovery shouldn't be as difficult. I just talked to someone who's teenager had theirs out and they took a month to recover. Hope you at least got some good painkillers out of it!
To be fair, Kevin, I had complications. Normally they just zap your tonsils right off and that's the end of it, but the infection went into the walls of my throat so he had to remove tissue and stitch up the sides of my throat. I couldn't speak for 10 days and I consumed nothing but water and my medications. The 11th day I had one spoonful of chicken broth, but it was too salty and it burned. Don't wait until you have a raging throat infection to get it done.
I'm having my kids tonsils removed in the delivery room.
Thanks guys, I'm just super nervous about him going under general anesthesia for this and the recovery. I just want him better! Good luck to you Kevin!
I would take the appointment. My kiddos tonsils had grown together in the 3 months it took to schedule the surgery. They call it kissing tonsils, which sounds cute, but is a nightmare when your kiddo stops breathing in her sleep.

I have an appt with an ENT this week because of the awful throat infection I've had the past few weeks. I really hope they don't suggest a tonsillectomy.
My two year old just had tonsil and adenoids surgery. All went great and he bounced right back.
I would take the appt. my son's issue wasn't infections/strep, it was just that he had giant tonsils that made him stop breathing at night (apnea). Following surgery, the surgeon was all "he had some really big tonsils. I see big tonsils. His were huge." Lol
I would take the appt and if the ENT says to, make the appt to have them taken out.
DD was almost 5 when she had her tonsils/adenoids out. She was a champ. Recovery wasn't too bad with her - she did sound funny for a few days. But keeping her still and relaxed (they told us not to let her run and jump around - HAHAHAHAHAHA) was the hard part. The day after surgery, she was ready to run around like a crazy kid.

DS has his adenoids out as soon as he turned 2, poor thing could hardly breathe and would wake up gasping. His recovery was like a day. i went into the operating room with DS and the surgeon to hold him while the local kicked in and to keep him calm. then i was right there when he woke up.
I know tonsils are more invasive, I had mine done at 6 for multiple infections. I was out of school for a week. I don't remember pain, just being freaked out that I couldn't wear underwear with my surgical gown. Screw the knives I wanted panties.
