Okay, so did you know that when you take photos with your iphone that it records the address of where you took it?
And that if you post that picture online a lot of places, pretty much anyone can download software to see the address of where you took it? (Facebook, at least, removes these details from the photos you post.)
I just learned this the other day and have since turned off the feature that records the address, but I freaked myself out by clicking on some of my photos and watching Google Maps zoom right the fuck in on where I was when I took it.
They did a news story about this a few years ago. They were able to GPS in on a photo, to the exact bedroom, the bed a child was sitting on when it was taken. This info is stored in the file and can be pulled very easily.

I knew that photos store metadata, which can include location info. I've had that feature turned off for awhile, but don't know if that is common knowledge. I'm also a photo/technology nerd haha.

Yes, there was a big to-do on my FB feed about this a while back... I think it was at least a year ago. People were posting warnings about it and instructions for turning that feature off. Seems like the same fwds are making the rounds again this week.

Yes, I got it via email from my grandfather so I hit up snopes all prepared to show him it was false. Then I saw it was real and started frantically stalking myself.
Then I found out Facebook removes that info so I'm happy I don't delete everything first and find this out later.

Ths was pretty much my face reading that
Ditto. I knew that researchers sometimes use data from people's cell phones, but I thought that could only be obtained in an aggregate, and was anonymous. I hadn't really thought about how this information could be used by a bad guy. Yikes.

I thought it sounded fake and alarmist at first, too. I mean, really, gps data encoded in pictures... it's mind boggling to me. But I'm like a caveman when it comes to technology and don't even have a smartphone, so there's that. lol
I learned to type on a typewriter, had a Brother word processor in college, and didn't have my first email account until 1998 or my first cell phone until 2001. I'm generally behind the times.
Don't feel bad, I just learned you can zoom in using the iPhone camera.
I did not know this.
I'm also all to the address info. I'm about to go to that link to try and figure out how to turn off that feature, but if I can't even figure out how to zoom with my phone, I may be a lost cause.
