I find it interesting that NJ is predominantly "crawfish" even though NY and PA are "crayfish" when we are so intertwined with both states (our news comes from either NYC or Philly - no TV news from NJ etc.)
That made me laugh out loud. I made DH pause the tv and we had a good laugh over that and all the others.
Discovered: I am a verbal schizo. I share an unusually large number of words/pronunciations with the good people of Milwaukee, probably because my grandparents lived there when I was about 3, and I lived with them. I also use a number of New York terms since my grandparents are from upstate originally. Aaand then I have all the southern words.
I am almost 100% aligned with upstate NY, which is not actually where I grew up. Must be my mom's influence. I live one county south of where she grew up.
Also: "Seriously? Alabama and Mississippi that is terrible."

I've heard that so many times since being here! I showed DH the map and made him guess what the phrase was and he couldn't come up with it, then laughed when I told him and said, "oh, yeah, that's right!". It's mainly old country folks who say it - it's not like your bank teller's saying it, KWIM?
I love this. H and I debate word pronunciation all the time.
I grew up in South Florida, moved to NYC for college and stayed there a few years after that. Since then we've live in Central Jersey and now in SE PA. Even though I'm from the part of Florida that uses northern pronunciations, I pretty much say everything like a southerner: car-mel, cran, man-aze, pa-jam-uhs, tennis shoes.
The one exception is "pecan". I say pee-can, H says pick-ahn. This survey says he's the southerner on that one.

I fall squarely into NE Ohio (which is where I spent ... well, a long time), except for the crayfish/crawfish/crawdad one. NEO says crawfish. I say crawdad, which I guess puts me in southern Ohio? I got that one from my grandparents and other relatives. Everyone in my (very large) extended family calls them that, although I cannot say that most of my extended family isn't at least mildly redneck.
Drive-thru liquor stores?!?! Clearly, this is a must nationwide. I feel deprived.
This also identifies me as all over the place verbally. I grew up in Indiana, went to school for a little while in NJ and IL, and have been back in IN for a while now. One would think I would talk IN, but my dad is from Mexico; so, you can imagine how that has impacted my speech.
I may drive on the freeways now, but I'll never call em anything but hoagies! Hoagiefest just doesn't work without a name like hoagie!
I totally just read this as you call highways/freeways "hoagies" and I was all ... well, that's different. LOL
Oh yeah, that's not terribly clear is it? I grew up driving on highways and had no hesitation switching to freeways, but I feel like i could never ever in a million years call a hoagie a sub.

truly it's the only kind I use. I mean, why get out of the car? My favorite one is right next to a garden center- owned by the same family. So the other weekend I picked out all my plants and then did the drive through on the way out and got a case of beer.

I am so jealous of this. We moved to a state that doesn't allow you to bring your child in, so all liquor store trips must be carefully choreographed to be child-free.
The first time H tried to go in with M (he's 2) and got kicked out, another customer followed him out and offered to buy H's beer for him.
oh my goodness if I had a kid I would never drink again, that would be so inconvenient. It's hard enough here with the limited hours and no alcohol in grocery stores, etc.
