Where in your yard is it located? Front? Back? Side? DH and I built one at a workshop last night and I'm totally psyched because I've wanted one for FOUR years! But now I'm not certain where to put it and I need to decide quickly b/c DH is installing it tonight after dinner. It seems like the kind of thing you'd put in the backyard. But honestly, we have more things out front that need watering regularly (out back I only have herbs and tomatoes which I typically hand water). It is a tall white barrel so its not like it's some hideous looking thing, but I just don't know where people typically put them.
Here's an old exterior photo of the house (the landscaping is very different now). If I put it out front I would place it immediately to the right of the porch by the downspout or possibly at the right corner of the house next to that downspout. Would that look okay?
What say you? Or am I completely overthinking this?
Mine is out front. It's where the stuff I have to water is. It's also where the downspout I can access easily is. It's also an edge so it stops people from cutting the corner to my flower to the lawn.
I think it's fine. And mine isn't super pretty. Not trashy..but not pretty either.
When we finally install them, they will be on all four corners of the house. Thankfully, they're a plain khaki color. Even if they weren't, though, we'd still arrange them the same way.
I'm assuming there's no sort of pumping system on it? On that lot, I want it in the high spot (all the way on the left) so that it's super easy to drag a hose anywhere on the rest of the lot and let gravity to the watering for me, assuming there's a spigot at the bottom of the barrel. Is there a spout on that end of the house?
If you're watering from a hose on the barrel, I agree with juno that gravity needs to be considered. Mine's on the side of the house (but we use that as the main entrance so it's kind of the front). It's on level ground, but I fill up a watering can so it doesn't matter to me.
I don't have a rain barrel, but I want one (or two) SO bad. I wouldn't put it out front (and the HOA probably wouldn't allow that anyway) but I'd probably put it on the side of the house with the AC unit, and/or in the back under our deck.
