1. Ironman Canada (Whistler) 2. First one 3. Training is going really well. A few snafus along the way, but nothing major, just a day off here and there!

1. Which race?
Lake Placid (July 28th). See you there, lady!
2. First one?
Nope. I did Beach 2 Battleship in October and LOVED IT.
3. How's the training?
Pretty awful, since I had several unexpected and major life changes in the last year. Now I'm just trying to stay afloat, mostly with the bike. I should be okay, but it certainly won't be pretty or a PR.

I think you'll do better than you think!
Thanks! We'll see. Last week's OWS was awful, and I didn't get to go yesterday. I did run 16 yesterday and felt pretty good for most of it. I've done one loop of the bike course and it was torture, but mostly because I didn't know how much further I had to go and it was all mind games. Surprisingly enough, I did pretty well on the hills. I was going to go up again today, but I don't want to ride the Keene Descent in the rain, by myself, with almost bald tires, and traffic. Trainer day it is!

That was probably a good call. I wouldn't want to do that alone, in the rain either.

My advice is to do what you can to ride the entire course. The first loop is easy. The second is the worst - especially from Wilmington to LP! And make sure you are comfortable riding in the rain. It almost always rains up there!

Absolutely. I gave my summer class Fridays off so I can go up and ride the course as much as possible. I definitely plan on doing the full 112 at least once, preferably twice. The more time I get on that Jay to LP stretch, the better!! I averrged 14 mph on the first loop, so that at least gives me some breathing room with the first cutoff, but I definitely need to improve. That said, the hills weren't as awful as I expected. It was really just one big mind fuck because my garmin was broken (getting my replacement one any day now) and I jad no idea how much farther I had to go. Every curve in the road brought hope and then despair. THAT will mess with you.
You guys are so seriously awesome. I can't even wrap my head around an Ironman.
This. I love reading about your training.
This reminds me, I need to pay attention to my blog again. I've taken a break from it since B2B because I didn't feel like addressing the divorce, etc. plus I was pretty sure my XH was stalking it to see what I was doing. Now I don't really care. Time to start writing again!

Oh yes! I know that feeling!
The end is near when you get to the route 86 end of River Road. It's on the left, but 86 gets very wide and sweeps to the right. There is a parking area on the right. That's when I know I'm close to home because then all you have left is Mama Bear, Baby Bear, Papa Bear, then the climb past Northwoods and you are in town.
But, I must admit it has taken me years to get a feel for where I am at the end of that course! I've ridden it dozens of times to get to that point!

I remember that spot. Isn't there a bridge there where people like to fish?
Also, can you PLEASE tell me which hills are the bears (like mile markers or something)? I was trying to guess when I was out there, but I have no idea. Are they the ones right before you turn into Northwoods?
And yeah, when I turned onto Northwoods and saw the hills on that road, I actually pulled over and cried, because I thought I was done with that shit.
I'm actually looking forward to riding it again now that I'm more familiar with it. The first time was tough.
1. Which race? Ummm...no 2. First one? Ummmm...Heck No! 3. How's the training? Ya'll are crazy in that good kind of IM-training-racing-3-sports-kind-of-way!!....and I think all of you will completely rock the IMs!
I'll just stand over here with my bike and cheer you on.....

Yes, there is a bridge there. Papa Bear is the climb right before the turn. Baby Bear is the bump that comes before that, and Mama Bear is just before that one. I think Mama is the toughest for some reason. Papa doesn't seem so bad because you can see the top. Plus, the spectators all go out to Papa Bear and cheer you on, which is very cool.
We've nicknamed the climbs on Northwoods "Son of a Bitch" and "The Bitch."
The Bears (and Little Cherry and Big Cherry, which come before them) have always been labeled on the road, but since they've been paved, they aren't. I'm wondering if someone is going to get out there and paint the names on them again.
