Do you see how this cable is frayed?? I have no clue how it happened, no clue how to fix it. I'm guessing I should call the shop and get it in immediately in the morning, yeah? Ive only had the bike for like 2 months. I have to leave by 2:00pm tomorrow for my race.
Im literally covered in oil marks and crying. Tomorrow when I'm all checked into my hotel and relaxing I will probably be laughing at myself for being so worked up....right???
Can someone just come in here and tell me it won't mess up my race and I can take it in to be fixed on Monday?! Please?! Should I bring my road bike with me instead?
Tonight's my good pre-race sleep night...I can't let this ruin it!
*breathe!!* It looks like the cable frayed and housing snapped. Cables do that. I had a shifter cable snap on me during a ride a few months ago. The GOOD news is that it's an easy fix! It should take about 15-20 minutes. Cable replacement costs $10-15 or may be free if your bike is under warranty.
You have to get it fixed. The bike will not shift without the cable replaced. If you can't get it fixed, I'd take your road bike.

It's as if the clouds parted when I saw you answered. Thank you!!!!! I'm calling first thing tmrw morning. I really hope they can fit me in. I can't shift into my highest gears.
My H wants me to tell you thank you - if that's any indication of my panic the last couple of hours.
Aaah, sorry kams! It will all be okay though. If it were me, I would just show up at SS when they open tomorrow morning and force them to help you, esp because you just bought the bike from them and it shouldn't take too long. I'm a little aggressive like that though. ;)And if they say no, text me and I'll help you call around to find a place that will squeeze you in. Go to sleep!
Glad you are calmer now! If your LBS can't fix it, call around to another shop. Most will be happy to do an emergency repair.* I don't know what caused the cable fray/snap. Sometimes it just happens. Get BOTH the housing and cable replaced. Have them check the frame and area surrounding the cable to make sure there is nothing sharp that may have cut the housing.
*Buying your BSG (Bike Shop Guy/Gal) a six pack of their favorite beverage (or wine in the case of my local BSGal) after you get back from your race as a thank you is always appreciated for emergency repairs.

I have an appointment at 9:30, but I will call them as soon as I'm done (which should be 10) and tell them I am on my way over to have it fixed. They've been so helpful, so I hope they don't stop now.
I will let you know how the saga unfolds. I am in bed with a lavendar heating pad on my back and I'm about to start my own private savasana, lol.

Hope you can get it sorted out in time! If you end up on your road bike because they aren't able to fix it in time, then how lucky to have 2 bikes! Mine is my one & only, which has its downsides.
Sorry! I didn't see this last night. Sadlebred is right (of course). Your LBS should have no problem with fixing it immediately. Be sure to bring them some of their favorite libations as a thank you!
LOL. So glad it was an easy fix and that you got an answer. I could feel your panic building and was getting ready to start paging every H&F cyclist to this thread for you. Good luck!!
They are fixing it right this minute! Thank you all for calming me down
WOOT! I was thinking about you ALL DAY. I am so glad it worked out.
Ahhh thank you. It was so quick & easy - I love SS! Now I'm on to the next hurdle of getting E to snooze when we are all in the same hotel room. She's in her pack n play yelling "I want to jump on the bed!" & B & I are hiding in the bathroom.
