What we're all laughing about is that you are the ONLY one talking about your education and job. It is not relevant to this thread.
I really do not care what you are all "laughing about." It is very relevant when most of you are saying that you work just as hard as the teachers...well what is it that you do for a living? I am genuinely curious. I mention my own career and educational background to show that despite having a good career and high level of education, I do not think that I could do the job of a K-12 teacher, and I absolutely respect the work that they do and support them 100%.
And that's fine. There are many people who couldn't/wouldn't want to be teachers. Hell, I am a HS teacher, and there is no way I could be an elementary teacher. I could not handle potty breaks and snot and being around 6 year olds all day, and I greatly admire all those people who can. I bow down to them. That doesn't inherently make the job of an elementary teacher more or less difficult than a HS teacher.
I could also never be a welder, mechanic, construction worker, accountant, doctor, etc. There are many things I do not have the skills for, nor the interest in. Each job is difficult in its own way, which is what I think you are failing to understand. You are trying to say that by having an advanced degree and what some might consider a hard job as well (scientist), you should be able to throw down the gavel on judging what jobs are or are not difficult. It doesn't work that way. Working in the trades, such as being an electrician, takes a lot less schooling than it does to get a PhD, yet I think that work would be incredibly difficult for me, and I would not be good at it.
A K-12 teacher is designing the runway for an airport. Of the planes that will use the airport, the lowest acceleration rate is likely to be 3 m/s2. The takeoff speed for this plane will be 65 m/s. Assuming this minimum acceleration, what is the minimum allowed length for the runway?
Gag. Yes, because every other job only has 1 specific task & that's it.
This. I get sick of hearing about how teachers are gods (and this is coming from someone who has a teaching degree and planned to be a teacher). Yes, teachers do very important work. However, so do MANY other people (who are just as or even more underpaid) - social workers, nurses, police officers, and public interest attorneys, just to name a few. There are just as many challenging aspects to these jobs, but you don't hear these folks patting themselves on the backs ALL.THE.F-ING.TIME.
you know, spanish, I'm actually really glad you're here.
I have this physics problem I've been struggling with. Just basic physics 101 shit. I'm sure you could solve this no problem.
A cylinder with a piston is filled with ideal gas. The gas temperature is held at 500K. The cylinder is heated by an oven through a square metal rod with sides 2.5cm and length 2m (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 2 m) which is connected between the oven and the cylinder.
If the oven is held at 1300K, and the heat current conducted through the metal rod is 20W, find the thermal conductivity of the metal in the rod.

I'm delighted you could overcome the obstacle of having a PhD to recognize work done by the NON-DOCTORATE HOLDING teachers
you just reminded me to make a melodramatic meme concerning my professor hate
Sigh, why do you assume that I am in academia. I am a physicist with NASA.
Then what the F are you doing on GBCN? Take your PhD and go figure out what planet we can live on and destroy next.
In all seriousness, congrats on being the first in your family to go to college. That's great. I get that you are proud, but when you jump on the highest horse you can find, you come off as an insufferable douche.
I was AWFUL at Physics and my teacher sucked ass. He was the worst teacher I ever had.
My high school physics teacher was seriously one of the most fantastic people I've known. And a great teacher.
Lucky! I was bad at word problems and didn't do great on the tests, but I always did my homework and did OK on the quizzes. The last 9 weeks, he decided to not have our final grade be based on anything but the four tests we would take which really did not work in my favor.
I was really good at math, but when it came to word problems, I had a very hard time. My trig teacher was a real jerk, but an awesome teacher. Physics teacher was a nice person, but sucked at teaching. lol

That's because they've all got their hands raised and are waiting to be called on - Like They're SUPPOSED To!
Maybe its because Jesus isn't allowed in schools? Otherwise I'm sure she would add pastor and soul saver (so, winner of everything) to her list.
I teach in a Catholic school, and my list most definitely includes Jesus. But it does not include politician, mother, father, banker, police officer, travel agent... or anything else. I'm just a teacher and the occasional Jesus.

No fucking way you're getting that plane off the ground at 65 m/s. Just saying.
(ok, I am making this up, I have no idea. lol just thought I'd throw that out there. I SOUND like I know what I'm talking about, and goddammit, I've worked several aircraft repair cases, so I know from take off velocities, right??)
Ha! I was like, what? I've never been on a plane that went 65miles per second since thats 224,000 miles per hour Although, isn't that close to what a space ship travels? Damn, I wish we had a NASA physicist up in here that we could ask......

OMG, PEOPLE. WHY ARE YOU DOING THE WORK FOR THE PHYSICIST?!

And with your post, I just started singing Tears For Fears' "Your Own Personal Jesus" to myself :-)

Despite my myriad opinions on sanctimonious teachers, all I have to add here is that, when we talked about "What would your screen name be if you rode the coat-tails of your husband's job?", mine was, "PhuckingAPhysicist" and I thought I was pretty funny.
I am not sure that most people in most professions are working as hard as teachers. When teachers are "on the clock," my understanding is that they cannot be surfing the web and posting on Facebook like many people I observe day-to-day do when they are on the clock. Professions differ in terms of their impact on society and I would put educators, doctors, law enforcement, and others like them as the most important for our society. These people are deserving of our kudos and not derision.
Interesting, we have quite a few teachers who are regulars here.

Just because you couldn't or wouldn't want to do the job It doesn't mean that you don't work hard in your chosen career. It may just be a different kind of hard.
I support teachers I just greatly dislike the ones that are Martyrs. You'll never hear a doctor bragging on Facebook about how many lives he saved that day.
Amen, and any you did hear whining or bragging you'd rightfully think has a whiff of douche about him.
