So, I would like to make a piece of my wall in the kitchen magnetic. My best friend used Valspar and did four coats of the magnet paint and says it's not a super strong hold. I figured I would either do more coats or research for the best brands out there that offer a strong hold.
We have a small wall painted with magnetic paint. Initially we did an additive to a regular quart of paint. I forget where I got it from but I have a picture somewhere, I'll try to find it. Anyway, I ordered it online and thought I had enough for the small wall I did. I did two or three coats and it sucked.
I didn't want to wait for another order to ship, so I went to Home Depot and bought Rustoleum's magnetic paint and did a few more coats. There's probably six coats total on it and it still sucks. It holds up small magnets with thin pieces of paper, but anything more than that and it all comes crashing down.
ETA: Magically Magnetic Paint Additive from lyt.com. My sister looked into doing a magnetic wall in her house too, but she had heard about my experience and a few of her friends had trouble with their magnetic walls too so she didn't end up doing it.
I used it on the refrigerator in my daughter's play kitchen. I think I did 3 coats of the Rustoleum brand with one coat of latex on top. It holds her alphabet magnets ok, but not paper or anything like that. It's also a major pain to try to stir because all the metal sinks to the bottom and you're left with all the liquid on top, which sloshed over the sides a lot at the beginning. It's cute for her to have a magnetic fridge, but I think it would be easier to do a thin piece of metal if you want it over a whole wall.
We want to buy some magnetic dry erase board for my kids room. You can buy it online in diff sizes so I think we will use this. Originally we were going to use chalkboard paint and they we got excited about magnetic paint but read horrible reviews.
We had a friend make a magnetic road on a play room (magnets on hot wheels to drive on it) and it sucks. She had to get super cheap cars that were light or they fell off.
