We're trying to figure out what to put in this area. I want it to be used for informal dining, especially when we have the whole family in town and H wants it to be a loungey type area where you can have some coffee or a drink. This space is in front of our kitchen. We'd thought about something maybe like this. www.wayfair.com/Safavieh-Watson-4-Piece-Seating-Group-with-Cushions-FV20949.html
The toys won't stay here and the rug could stay or not just depending on what we put in the area.
If you're going to go lounge-like, I'd do something like a sectional. Do you have another eating area if you don't use it as a dining room? Also, is there are reason you're H wants this to be the lounge area rather than going to another room?

Yes, there's a formal dining room on the other side of the kitchen. He wants it to be more comfortable seating than a dining table so that people have somewhere to hang while others cook/clean in the kitchen since the actual dining and living spaces are closed off from the kitchen.

I personally don't care for outdoor furniture inside and that screams outdoor to me. I think it would look fine as a lounging area but I would do something like this with 2 chairs in front of the fireplace and a couch opposite of it.
But I would rather if the dining table if I knew I were going to entertain my family frequently enough to get good use, unless you have another area that can be used for dining.
I have a friend who has a "morning room" in lieu of an informal dining set off her kitchen. They have a small table for two, a couple deep cushiony chairs and a love seat. She has an island which means the cook faces those who are seated there. It's really a great set up for informal parties.
Another friend installed a counter height gathering table which elevates guests to almost standing height- her kiddos are all teens/adults so it works well for her.
I don't like that set at all. It looks like the snap together plastic furniture from my ancient Barbie Dream House.

Like a sectional you'd see in a living room or something else?
