I finally got to race my mountain bike this year. The weather has been really bad every.single.race.I've.wanted.to.do. I decided that I was going to do the Georgia State Championships in Columbus, GA today come hell or high water. Well, there was a little bit of water. Columbus got doused with rain Friday like most of Georgia. I heard reports that the trail was in good condition by Sat. afternoon. I got down there Sunday morning just in time for it to pour. It stopped raining long enough for me to register and warm up. As we were lining up to start, it poured again for 5 minutes. The half an hour or so of rain was enough to make the first mile of the trail like riding on an ice rink with slick roots and rocks. Half the trail was really gross, and the sandier half of the trail handles water really well and was in great shape. I got off to a good start and had a good first lap. I opted to walk a rock garden both lapsince wet rocks (really, these are more like small off camber boulders) and I don't get along very well. The trail wasn't bad the first lap, but by the second lap part of the mud started to turn to Peanut Butter. PBM (peanut butter mud) is really hard to ride through. It's also hard on your equipment and wears down brake pads quickly. My second lap was just a minute or so slower than the first.
I held on for the win! That makes me the Cat. 2 Women's Georgia State Mountain Bike Champion!
