We just bought our first home. It has a ton of huge gorgeous windows but not a lot of square footage. I am loath to install some kind of blinds, but drapes (done right) seem to me like they would prevent a lot of usable space. I'm thinking about attempting to diy roller or roman shades. Has anyone successfully pulled this off? Is there some other treatment I'm missing?
We have wood blinds and a few plantation shutters. I mostly do decorative drapes but we have functional drapes in the bedrooms for light control (blinds alone weren't cutting it). I would never do just curtains though, mostly because it's kind of all or nothing. I can open the blinds a little bit to let light in but still have some privacy.
We had cellular shades in our old home and they were ok. They weren't crazy expensive, we covered every every window in 2700 sq ft for I think $2000.
We have temporary window coverings up in our bedroom and the living room, until we can figure out what to do in our new-to-us, kind of modern style home. I actually just bought inexpensive tension rods and curtains that I put up every night and take down in the morning for now.
We have some pretty tall, narrow windows in our living room that look great uncovered because of the modern style. We live on a fairlyy wooded lot near the end of a dead end road, but I figure if I can see the television and inside the refrigerator across the street when I look toward my living room, they can see inside my house too...and we have a lot more window surface than they do. I hate to do something that will detract from the windows, so I might do some motorized blinds on them so that we can have privacy when we want it, but nothing too noticeable otherwise...motorized because the windows are at least 10 ft high and cords showing would be distracting. I think curtains or some kind of panels would be kind of hard because we don't have much wall space between the windows and the corners.
We have two other smaller/shorter windows in the living room that we don't necessarily need to cover for privacy, but we do need some protection from the sun through those windows, so we may go with some blinds there too.
All windows have 2" faux wood blinds. Then in the master & kid bedrooms there is a blackout roller shade. In the master we also have decorative (non-closing) curtains. And we have curtains over the back door (mostly for heat gain). I like the white blinds because they just blend in and aren't noticeable yet let in a lot of light when we want it. I much prefer them over the roller shades which are functional, but ugly. I wish I had some sort of a valence in the bedrooms to cover the roller.
We have enje roller blinds from Ikea. Roller blinds are the prettiest things in the world, but they look/feel more age appropriate for the age/design of our house. What's nice about the enje is that the material is more like sunshade blinds; so, they let in a lot of light. This means there is not much privacy, though. Eventually, we'll add curtains where necessary.

We have light blocking curtains AND light-blocking roller blinds in the bedrooms upstairs. Downstairs we have mini-blinds (UGH - left behind by the seller and we're too lazy to take them down until we figure out what we DO want.)
We're putting in divided plantation shutters throughout the house, except for the two sliding doors to the patio and the two glass doors to the balcony. I'm thinking of roman shades, drapes, or a combo of both for all the doors.

I'm still working on covering our windows, too. We are getting plantation shutters for the windows in the dining room and formal living room. We have white blinds with white tape in all of our bedrooms (we ordered through Budget Blinds). They look like this:
Amelia's room has a white balloon valance similar to this one (on top of blinds)
Hunter's room has a navy, nautical looking tie up valance. We have swag and jabot in the guest room- I don't love it, but it was free. I have dupioni curtains I've had for a decade for my room, but I haven't hung them yet. My family room window and kitchen windows are bare. I'll eventually buy some crewel and make something for them. I have no plans to put blinds on them.
