Need suggestions for a really low-maintence garden

I live overseas most of the year but starting this year will spend about 4-6 weeks a year in a summer house we just bought. It has a big yard and I really don't want it to look ugly and bare, but obviously we won't be there in the spring to get things planted. I know nothing at all about gardening, so was wondering if anyone could suggest some good, reliable annuals or wildflowers or something we could plant that will pretty much grow on their own each year and need little or no maintenance since we aren't going to be there long. We live in the Northeast in the mountains, so quite a cool climate most of the year. Thanks for any suggestions!

Look into native plants for your area. Those will do the best with little care.

And not annuals. Perennials.

I used to hate hosta, but I have now learned of their appeal and am transplanting ours all around the yard.
