Do you completely trust w/r/t calories burned? I got a polar pf4.
I just started jogging this month and the machine tells me I'm burning 250-300 calories in 50 minutes and the HRM is telling me over 500 calories. I mean, I'm sweating my ass off and working harder than I ever have on the elliptical, so I FEEL like I'm burning that many calories. This is my first HRM and I guess it's hard for me to trust it.
It's the closest I can get so I go with it. I do subtract out my BMR though (so about 60-80 cal/hour).
What's BMR?
Base metabolic rate - how many calories your body burns just maintaining you alive. If I'm using the calories earned from the HRM for eating extra, the calories I would have burned just laying on the couch are already accounted for in my daily food allowance, so I don't want to count them twice.

Ohhhhh..... that's awesome. All of my years of counting calories and working out, I have never even considered this. Thanks.
well I don't know what to tell you. I'm still dubious that you're burning in excess of 500 calories over 3.5 miles. That would mean you are burning like 140 cal/mi. that's a lot.

I completely agree with you, which is why I posted! I am perplexed.
I guess I'll just use this as a baseline like I used the machines as a baseline and see what happens as my running improves. I also used the HRM for my circuit training workout yesterday and it was right on what MFP said (245 calories for 25 minutes) and what others my size said their HRM said (I googled).

You can burn more/higher amt if you are new to an exercise, it's hot out or higher weight. I know as I've become more efficient in my workouts and lost weight I have to work much harder for a good calorie burn. You may or may not burn that much as you are new and I have no idea of you weight. I burn anywhere from 80-100 calories running per mile but used to burn more when I first started back to working out after my car accident and at 28 lbs larger and i burn more in the summer. There is a lot to consider

Thanks for chiming in. I was wondering your opinion.
I agree there's a lot to consider.
I guess the only thing that matters is that I'm working much harder than I ever have and am sweating my ass off so that means I'm on the right track! :-)

Lol yes you are in the right track. I'd say knowing your activity level in mfp you probably burn 370-400 before considering how hard you are working, I swear running I had never worked so hard at first than anything esp elliptical as i swear i barely burn anything on that thing anymore lol, and depending on how hot. Here in Tampa you could've burned close to 500 as humidity can really raise a calorie burn. I know in hot yoga I burn 250 per session in the winter, summer closer to 300-400 just due to the extra heat and humidity.
