I missed my swim practice this morning because my alarm didn't go off at 5, as scheduled, but instead I was woken up by the dog whining about going out at 6:30. Half an hour after swim started. *sigh* The alarm was set properly and turned on, but just never went off. This is sort of an ongoing thing with this alarm, so I'm done with it. I need a new alarm clock.
Recommend yours?
My requirements: <$50, doesn't light up OR lights can be turned off, LOUD/ANNOYING, reliable. Battery backup is a plus.

I have a cell phone (just a standard non-data phone), but its battery is so unreliable at this point it cannot be trusted to stay on overnight. Honestly, I barely use it anymore, so half the time I forget about it anyhow.
All that to say - call me old-fashioned, but I'd really prefer a real alarm clock, not a phone function.

Wop, do you have that? Would it terrify the dog? She normally sleeps on her bed sort of next to my side of the bed and I wonder if she'd get scared by it? (She's a wimp.)

I do not have one, but have considered one because the H is really hard to wake and we have the same random no-alarm problem you had this morning. I don't know much about them. I think Brookstone carries them, so if you had one near you, you could check it out.
i use my cell phone, i just have it charging at my nightstand each night. i was able to find a ring tone for the alarm that is obnoxious enough to wake me, but not enough to wake my husband when he doesn't want to wake (same courtesy isn't provided for me, btw, as he has his actual alarm clock set to an annoying talk radio channel and up too loud so that it is shocking to wake to....and he snoozes 1-2x before getting up typically too! ughs).
We have this one, it's great. It automatically sets itself, even after power goes off, has battery back up, dual alrms if you and your DH get up at different times, and you can totally adjust the brightness level. It's $39,
