So, I'm signed up for the Color Vibe this Saturday. Its my first 5k in years. I just started running again at the beginning of the year after taking a hiatus for a few years. My goal was originally to just run (or jog. Whatever) the whole time. Now I'm second guessing myself. I've never been a good racer. Crowds make me incredibly nervous and I usually choke.
Anyway, has anyone done one of these? Are the crowds if walkers so massive that its impossible to run at any sort of pace? Is it hard to breath with all that colored powder stuff flying around the place? Any additional tips?
It's my understanding that these are more like fun runs than races. I've also heard that the crowds can pretty much hinder running. BUT, that is not to say it's not fun! Enjoy getting back out there!

Yeah, these races aren't good for actual racing. The last one I did was ridiculously overcrowded. I walked the whole thing - stupid shin splint - but even if I wanted to run, it wouldn't have been pretty. There was no way for the walkers to stay to one side as originally requested, way too many. If I had to guess there were five walkers for ever one runner, plus the kids and the strollers.
Hopefully I'm not scaring you, if you go in with the mindset of just having fun and not worry about racing, you'll be all set. If you do want to race - make sure to get to the very front of the first heat, even if you run a 12 minute mile, get in front and to one side.
'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather, to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming 'Woohoo! What a ride!' So every day is a holiday and every meal a feast."
I did Color Me RAD on Sunday. I was sick and counting on not being able to run the whole time due to walkers, crowds, powder being chucked in my face. There were a TON of walkers but they were easy to get around, and we were towards the front of the second wave so it wasn't too crowded. I did run the whole time but there is no clock and I didn't time myself. It was a lot of fun though, I went with a group and we had a blast!

It isn't timed, it was fun. The color vibe I did had 4 color stations along the way and you actually had to veer over to them if you want to get the powder on you. They might throw it in your face, but no one did that to me. I didn't have any trouble breathing, but if you look up ahead at the next station, it does look like a cloud. If I had asthma, I'd wear a white handkerchief or gator around my breathing area just for the stations. Have fun!
I actually used it to get myself back into running after an injury. There's no pressure!
