Do you anticipate needing a hospital admission (planning for babies, chronic health issues)? In general, I find that most hospitals are fine, but if there's something particular you need, there is always one place that will be better than another and it's best to do some research.
I know how it is with a HMO and once you pick a PCP you are stuck in their hospital system. I switched to a Harvard Vanguard PCP recently and it's nice because there are so many specialists in the same building. Also they are affiliated with some of the bigger hospitals, which is my preference over community hospitals.
I am pretty sure there are Harvard Vanguard locations north of the city. I see my PCP there (but am not tied to an HMO, so see other doctors at BW, BI, etc) and love her. I have been very happy with HV overall.
Yeah, I live North but all my doctors are in Medford/Somerville near where I work and both are affiliated with area hospitals. If that's an area you're open to I'm happy to share my PCP as she's amazing. My OB-GYN is amazing too but is only accepting new patients who are pregnant.

Me too! My PCP is also at a Harvard Vanguard (Post Office Square), and I'm not tied to a HMO either. I'm very happy with HV.
Me three. My PCP is at the Kenmore HV. I love that all the specialists/depts are in one building. To date I have used the following there: PCP, Pulmonologist, Chiropractor, Ortho, had an MRI, Physical Therapy, and their pharmacy!
soxin2, I'd ask your current doctors for recommendations in your case. Lawrence General, Lowell General, and Holy Family are all in that area and fine as far as I know, but like I said, if you know in advance what you will need, then I would look and see if there are better options available. Lahey Clinic may be a good option if you don't want to have to go into Boston.

I used to work in Lawrence and heard surprisingly good things about the Lawrence Hospital. I don't have any personal experience with them, but several people in the Andover area seemed to like their doctors.
