Hello, I usually post on the S&B boards and have been lurking here a little bit lately. I recently just lost 61lbs and have another 30 to go. I work out six days a week but mostly all cardio. I hate weights, mostly because I don't really know what I am doing. I have been having a tough time the past month with losing and feel that I need to force myself to do weights. I was going to try crossfit. I bought a Groupon and figured, I could at least try it out. I am really commited to whatever it takes to get the rest of this weight off. Do any of you do crossfit? Can you recommend a good sneaker? And lastly, am I crazy doing this since I do not weight train? Should I just stick to free weights in the gym for now. Thanks!
*waves* I'm a Crossfitter! I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.
I workout in Reebok Nanos which is good for most everything I do in Crossfit.
You are absolutely not crazy at all! Any box worth its weight (pun intended lol) will have an on-ramp class in which you will learn the basics of the movements including the different lifts. If the box doesn't have a beginners class or on-ramp, run far far away from it. You will start slow with very little weight until you become proficient but you will learn quickly. The beauty of Crossfit is that everything is scaleable. You will not be using the same weight as the person next to you and that's perfectly okay. Also, there are modifications for different movements until you can do them Rx'd.
Thanks so much for getting back to me. I will check out shoes. The Groupon that I bought is for 4 "on ramp" classes and 2 regular crossfit. I am really excited to try this (a bit scared), but so ready! I start next Saturday. I'll post after that and let you know how it went.
I think a lot of people do crossfit here! I am very intrigued but am also like you--I stick mainly to cardio and get bored with the weights, etc, so I think crossfit would be a good option, but I feel like I am not quite yet ready for it--not strong enough. If I were you, since you already bought the crossfit pass, I would go for about a month to the gym doing weights 2Xs a week for at least 40 minutes. Get a personal trainer once maybe to show you the best things to do. Or see if there is a class at your current gym that focuses on strength--bootcamp or circuit training, bodypump, etc. Then once you do that for a month or so I would say I personally would be more comfortable going to crossfit.
Another crossfitter here, and I agree with pp. You can do it!! And you are definitely not crazy for thinking you can start weight lifting - everyone started somewhere!
One thing to keep in mind is that the vibe of each gym is different - so if you don't gel with the trainers and members of the CF you try, don't think that all crossfit boxes are the same. I love my gym and also love seeing the amazing progress I've made in the time I've been going there (2 yrs this September).
And also congrats on the weight loss! Awesome job!
