I'll be in NYC for a convention in July. DH is going with me and we're making a vacation out of it. We fly in late Wednesday and leave very early on Sunday. DH said we can go to one of the dinners that is hosted, but both would mean no Broadway show on Friday night.
-Thursday night is the more casual, summer dresses and such type dinner at the Central Park Boat House. I'll be in sessions all day from 9-3pm that day. Tickets are $120/each. We have a 5k for the convention the next morning at 9am. We know of at least one couple, maybe two that will be at this dinner.
-Saturday night is a big formal dinner, formal dresses and suits, in a ballroom at Times Square. We have a flight at 6am the next day. Tickets are $200/ea. We know of no other couples from my state going to this dinner. The big reason this one is on the table is that I've never been able to dress up in a formal dress and prance around NYC. It just seems so magical.
Clothing doesn't factor into this because I plan to just use rent the runway and both dresses I'm looking at are the same price.

As someone who used to go to multiple charity galas a year before becoming a SAHM, they ain't that great. If it's about the opportunity to get dressed up in NYC, get a sparkly cocktail dress and go out to a Broadway show and dinner at a great restaurant with your DH.

Do both and see a Saturday matinee.
If not possible, do the Boathouse. Love the Central Park Boathouse. Car service or, worse, maneuvering through Times Square in formal wear on a Saturday night ain't fun.

Oh wait, do you mean not isn't possible b/c of $$. I read to fast. In that case, I'd still do Thursdays event. There are super great deals for shows, though. Cheap!

:Y:
Plus the boathouse and a play is way more "NY experience" than the other thing.

Do Saturday night. It is an effing blast. And you best be at Friday's Foundation dinner, I'm researching my ass off for one of their presentations and I'm not even going to get to see it! *tears*

I think we're gonna skip the Foundation dinner. Sorry This trip is getting so freaking expensive. So, what do you think makes Saturday better than Thursday?

Yup, money. With Book of Mormon tickets looking like they'll be 100-200 each, we just can't do it all.

Because it is the big shindig of the entire centennial event. Not everyone will be in town yet for Thursday, etc. I don't know how to quite put it into words, but it is the big celebration of the entirety of convention. It is fun.
But hit the bar first. There is not usually booze due to all the underage undergrads. You will likely have the same issue on Thursday.
And ditch your husband for a while to go to some of the plenary sessions.

I'm going to all the plenary sessions, and I figured that there would be no booze. That is why I'm wondering if I should subject DH to a formal event without booze.

Why do you guys have to make this so difficult, @kirkette and sparkythelawyer! You're the only two that say formal. Why'd I go and give you extra votes..
Hit Benjamin's or Uncle Jack's Steakhouse for great steak. If you do Benjamin's, the mashed potatoes and asparagus are to die for. So is their steak sauce (which I normally don't like).
Ooh! Good to know.
Also, I was gonna ask you- do you know of a good place to buy tickets for Broadway shows?
