Would you mind sharing your cabinet painting process? I just bought BM Advance yesterday for our cabinets (I'm starting Friday). The salesman assured me I didn't need primer but the can says I do and I'm not wanting to take any risks with this project.
It's really pretty. Are you planning to add crown to the pantry cabinet by the fridge? Or are you waiting until you get a new fridge to finish it?
Yes! I think I'm eventually going to go to a counter depth, but in the meantime H is going to make me a small bookshelf to fill in the space. I think we're getting new floors in there early next year and once that happens I'll raise the pantry cabinet up a few inches off the ground and put a crown on top of that so it will all look like one built in unit. We were going to do it now, but it doesn't make sense if we'd have to undo it so soon.

Oh god, it sucked! But it was worth it to get a nice finish.
The bottom cabinets were already there, so I removed the doors and painted the fame by hand. I used 120 grit sandpaper on all of it but it still had a bit of a sheen which ended up being fine. The new pieces (top cabinets, island, raised panel end pieces for the bottom cabinets) came completely unfinished, bare wood.
I used this paint sprayer for everything but the bottom frames: www.gleempaint.com/hvcongunnew.html - It connects to an air compressor, which I already had. If you paint by hand you'll probably still want to sand between coats if you want the most professional looking finish possible. I really the the sprayer was worth the investment because of how much faster it went and how nicely it came out.
I primed everything with BM Fresh Start and I would definitely do it again since it made the Advance go further (two coats on this kitchen took 1.75 cans of Advance, it would have been much more if I hadn't primed). I let that dry a few hours and then did one coat a day until I had two coats of Advance on each side. I was generous with the paint on the last coat and it gave it a very nice even finish. Keep the doors flat when they dry to avoid drips.
Let me know if you want me to go into more detail on anything.
Thanks everyone! I'm actually surprised how happy I am with how it turned out. I didn't expect all the decision making to be as stressful as it was and I was convinced I was going to end up not liking something but happily that is not the case!
d0ri - yes, we've used ours as a drying rack for large things and it's great at letting all the food rinse off without getting stuck at the bottom of the dish I'm trying to clean.
I*t looks amazing. Your island is completely gorgeous.
Mind sharing your source for cabinets? I read that the lowers were there, but did you buy all the uppers or just replace the doors? How about the island?
And thanks for the details on cabinet painting process. looks like it was well worth the effort - so beautiful.

It looks fantastic. I would love before pictures, too.
I really like the navy island. Do you have drawers/cabinet access on both sides of that island? I want to add an island to our kitchen when we remodel, but we would have a walkway on one side to the back door, so I like that you don't have stools/seating at yours.

Thanks! I got the cabinets from www.unfinished-kitchen-cabinets.net/. It's their Fontana line in maple. The island is from them as well - it's in their "Designer Islands" section. It's the cottage one which usually comes with bead board panel doors and sides, but I asked them to make it match the other cabinets and they did it at no additional charge. I was happy with their customer service and their cabinets are made in the US.
I will say if you go with them, be prepared on delivery day. This is how they arrived via FedEx freight. They were stacked too high to get into the garage and we had to get everything unpacked before it rained.
The other place I would consider ordering from is www.barkercabinets.com. They don't have the design I went with, but I've heard raves about the quality of their work.

You guys really improved the look - and I don't like the cabinets that were there either.
Oh and not sure what's on the other side of the window, but if you ever want another project, it would be cool to add a bench under that window near the pantry (Fridge wall).

The drawers only pull out towards the stove but the cabinets do open on both sides. The one closest to the sink is going to become the pull out trash cabinet soon though, so we probably won't use the door near the fridge. I do think the island is worth it even without seating - the extra prep space is awesome.
You can see the top of the half wall in the very last picture, but that will come down eventually and we'll put a table back in the corner space so we'll still have an eat in kitchen.

Thanks so much for the info!!! I've wanted a white kitchen for years and I'm so excited to do this project. I can't think of any other questions now but once I start on Friday/Saturday I may have a few. I'm also checking out the link you gave for the unfinished cabinets. I want to replace our upper doors, they have that same arch design that your old kitchen has.

That window looks out at the backyard, which is actually pretty nice. We thought about putting in a banquette there, but it just wasn't going to work with the spacing. Long term it's possible that we'll knock out that window and put in french doors that lead out to a deck, but it's one of those decisions that probably won't be made for a few years. It kind of depends on when we get tired of making big changes =). If we don't do it, I would love to do a built in bench seat.
