This baby is currently hanging in my foyer, and it is ugly as sin. There's not much hope for it, is there? I've been trying to brainstorm ways to alter it and make it more bearable, but I'm not coming up with much.
I don't think it's that bad (at least not compared to some of the hideous 1970s light fixtures I have in my house), but if you hate it now, I can't think of anything you can do to it that will make you like it.

I might be tempted to disassemble it and spray paint it in a strong color (turquoise, navy, emerald, perhaps) like this Tobi Fairley lantern. After the cost of spray paint, you still will save like $3895. ;-)
We have the same one...it's huge and then we have a smaller version going up the stairs. Yay. I have been tempted to paint it ala Katie Bower but Haven't pulled the trigger. Please post pics if you do it!

I agree, you don't have anything to lose! I would try paint first, and I also wonder what it would look like if the glass was frosted. It would hide the interior "candles" and perhaps simplify the look.
At the risk of sounding like YHL, I think it might look better spray painted ORB. I've done it with a couple light fixtures and they've been way more palatable afterwards. Colorful painted light fixtures are NMS.
Not worth the hours of masking to paint it, and the glass is not likely to be removable, at least not easily.I vote CL it and buy something you actually like.
I wouldn't bother masking. Just use a brush or rub on finish and any that gets on the glass will easily clean off with a scraper/razor if it doesn't just wipe off.

We have it too. House built 10 years ago. The good news is they used that ugly A&S's thing in every house in the neighborhood, even the newer ones, so if we sell, no one will judge us for it, the bad news is DH thinks it is perfectly fine, so there will likely never be money allotted to fixing it.
I will probably try to orb it, but it is way up high an we don't currently have a long enough ladder to even reach it. So once enough light bulbs go out, we will have to buy a ladder and then I can get it down and try something.
