Got an old friend coming over tonight and no groceries or meal planned. Also my work day is kind of crazy, but I can run to the store and babysit something simple while it cooks. I don't eat wheat, so no pastas, paninis, etc.
Salmon (grilled on stovetop) with "evil jungle sauce" (or not), rice, and a veggie (sprouts, broc, whateve). We have a great Asian market near us that has the best fish. The salmon is always so fresh it is still bleeding. So it looks very fancy but is something we have almost weekly.
Roast chicken. So easy but sooooo delicious. Throw some carrots, potatoes, and onions in the pan. Make a green salad at the last minute. WALLA! Perfect roast dinner, minimal doing.

This was my first reaction because we just got a rotisserie for our grill. Chicken on the spit, potatoes underneath, green salad.
Some combo of berries, Ice cream/sorbet and/or cookies from the store. Since it's summer, I'd pour limoncello over vanilla ice cream and blueberries for a boozy treat.
We usually order pizza or Portuguese barbecue with we get together with friends at one of our houses.
In the past I've cooked pork tenderloin with Dijon mustard and white wine sauce, mashed potatoes, and vegetables; roasted chicken with potatoes/fries and vegetables; or grilled food (burgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts marinated in Italian dressing, steak).
Tonight we're going to grill up some chicken breasts for tacos.

Ditto. This is my go-to company meal. I cut up the veggies and smear the chicken with butter ahead of time. When the guests arrive, I put the veggies in the pan w/ chicken on top. Voila, I have an hour to chit chat and enjoy appetizers with no cooking. Bird comes out, cue ooohs and ahhhs.
I would grill a pork tenderloin with whatever marinade I had on hand. Throw on some asparagus or zucchini with salt and pepper. Takes only the time to grill it. I would slice some red skin potatoes and roast in the oven with some herbs and olive oil. Those take maybe 45 mins, but only 5 minutes or so to prep.
Ooh I'm getting corn in my farm box today and DH can't eat it, so it's perfect for me and my girlfriend.
Maybe flank steak, corn (with thomas keller lime butter), and a side salad.
That sounds awesome. I was coming in to say that kabobs are not a good meal for a busy day; there's too much hands-on prep - cutting, skewering, etc. The menu you settled on sounds better anyway. Grilled corn with lime butter is heavenly.
In the winter - Alton Brown Pot Roast with Mashed Cauliflower (or potatoes) and some sort of green veggie
In the summer - Grilled meat of some type (burger, steak, pork tenderloin, marinated tri-tip, etc), big salad, and some type of grilled vegetable (corn, zucchini, etc)

Except when you buy the awesome pre-made kabobs that you just have to throw on the grill from whole foods. They are up at the butcher.
