Well, we think it's a brown recluse anyway. He didn't see what bit him. He didn't even mention anything to me until we were going to bed last night and by then it was swollen and felt really hot to the touch, with a small whitehead blister in the middle. His elbow is now the size of a lemon. He showed it to some co-workers this morning who said it was a brown recluse spider bite.
He's going to the doctor this afternoon. They didn't insist that he come in right away or go to the ER so that's a good thing right?
Whatever you do, don't google 'brown recluse spider bite.'
Update: H just called me. He's on his way home now and will explain better when he gets here, but it's not a spider bite, according to the doctor. Something burst in his elbow and now it's infected. And H said something about some blood disease that's been happening a lot in our area lately? The fuck? I don't know. I'm going to get details when he's home and not whining about how much his ass hurts from the shot they gave him.
When I managed a restaurant, we had an exchange student that worked in the kitchen who came to work after being bitten by a brown recluse. It looked awful - all black and oozy. I told him to get the hell out of my kitchen with that and go to urgent care

Yikes! He definitely needs to go to the doctor! The good news is that I know 2 people who got bit by one in the same week and they were both absolutely fine pretty quickly after going to the doctor.
I got a spider bite one time when I was hanging up halloween docorations. (Go figure). It had to have been in the stored boxes. Ugh.
Anyways, it bit me in the center of my back, at the bra-snap spot. Effing awesome. So I go in to the doc-in-a-box because I am in a LOT of pain, and ow-ow-ow, my back is killing me, it hurts!!! So the doc is all condescending and "I'm sure its just a zit.... oh. oh, yeah. THAT is a spider bite". Thanks, jackwagon. I KNOW. Now fix it!!!!
Short-short version: Grossness ensued - it felt WAY better after that - and then I got some good drugs & antibiotics. It was a few days off of work because my warbrobe was, ahem, limited.
Brown recluse spiders are terrifying. I know a guy who almost lost his leg after getting bitten. He's morbidly obese and his body just couldn't heal itself. From what I've read on Dr. Google, most bites don't come with severe complications. I'd get him checked out for peace of mind.
Yeah, I'm glad he is going now. My mom almost died from a brown recluse bite. It was really bad. She was in her 20s and had just had me. Had to wean and go on major antibiotics. Yuck!

Could he have burst a bursa sac?
That's it! I was just hopping online to google it.

The blood disease thing he mentioned on the phone is a possible staph infection that he probably picked up at the gym. They gave him antibiotics and want him to follow-up with our primary care next week.
I had bursitis in my elbow and it was HUGE. Red, hot, puffy, etc. Luckily, mine wasn't infected, but it sure as shit felt like it.
It is possible for it to get infected, so I'm glad he's on antib's or something. Ice helped me bring down the swelling, as did keeping it in a sling and not using it.

Please make sure he does follow up. The last time H got an infection in his knee, it took several rounds of different antibiotics before it cleared up. He still has a scar.

Add that to the list of reasons why I don't like gyms.

Staph is nothing to fuck with, especially if it is in the blood stream. I would call his primary and make them aware of it today. It could be a round of antibiotics, it could be much worse. Pay very close attention to his mental status, if anything is out of the ordinary, go to the ER.
I know I am talking extremes, but my dad got a staph infection that went into his blood, he went spetic and almost died from it. He did pass, possibly from complications with the medications, a few months later. Better to be safe.
eta: let me clarify. why would that he the likely culprit of where he got it?
That's just what H said the doctor said. I googled and a couple of sites mentioned contact sports and sports teams passing it around so I could see it getting passed around the gym if the equipment isn't being properly wiped down after each use.
