We're trying to get our trucks around the fire and our drivers are stuck, our stores are running low on gas, and this town may not make it There is almost no way out of this valley area now unless you go south in to New Mexico. Ugh.
South Fork, a mountain town of 400 residents in Colorado, may be completely destroyed by a massive wildfire, the Associated Press reports.
Chances of saving the small tourist town are low to moderate, fire officials told the AP. The town's residents were evacuated friday morning.
Wildfires have taken over much of Colorado for the past week and a half. Two people have died and about 400 homes had been lost as of earlier this week in the Black Forest fire northeast of Colorado Springs.
Dry conditions and high winds have allowed fires to spread quickly and made them difficult to contain.
The fires have nearly wiped out entire neighborhoods. Photos of the destruction from the Black Forest fire show some homes standing miraculously untouched amidst a charred forest.
South Fork is a tourist town in the southwest part of the state. It is situated hundreds of miles away from Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs.
Earlier in the day the Colorado State Patrol Trooper Twitter account tweeted this picture of South Fork, pointing out that winds were "picking up significantly:"
We stay in the same cabin at Riverbend Resort there every August, the week before school starts. We have reservations there again in less than two months. They were placed on mandatory evacuation yesterday before the town. The owners and staff are wonderful and I will absolutely be beside myself with hysterical sadness if it burns down.
ETA: This is the picture they posted on their FB page, taken from the front porch of the office, right before they left yesterday.
And in my picture of DS sitting on the back patio of the cabin... see that little cabin/shack down in the field? That's "Sparky's Place." They filmed National Lampoon's Vacation at that resort. The whole Colorado scene up to where the dog pees on the picnic basket and then they drive away with it tied to the bumper.
I'm getting VERY aggravated at our local news right now. They don't seem to give a shit about this poor town. We go through their a lot on our way to Creede and it's a beautiful spot.
Instead, the news has to show reviews for ice cream scoopers. Rage.
Yeah, it's nasty around the area lately. We're in the Springs and we've been getting a ton of smoke and ash from that fire. I really hope some miracle happens and the fire stays away from South Fork. It's such a quaint place. The fires this year and last year are just so incredible. We need rain!
I'm so sad. My aunt and uncle have a vacation cabin there. My uncle actually evacuated this morning. They have six children and I can't imagine losing the home where so many memories were made for their family over the past 30 years. I'm praying that their cabin is spared, but it doesn't sound like the odds are very good.
