Mine has been having problems for quite awhile, but now, (after an incident wth water a couple of weeks ago), the old issues are worse, and now it won't type the letters i and k, and won't backspace.
it has made posting interesting. And frustrating. Relying on spell check, c&p and creativity is exhausting. Searches are not too easy either.
If you got the one reviewed you have 500GB HDD (1GB doesn't exist on computers) and 4GB RAM, it does have graphics which is a plus. I'm not a huge fan of Lenovo's, they don't last long in my experiences.
I'm a computer nerd and here are my opinions on MFG and such.
Dell: Used to be great but took a bad turn when they changed management and have been pretty craptastic lately. Failing components and a lot of software issues are common.
HP: Not terrible, a little overpriced and come with a TON of bloatware.
Alienware: Was purchased by Dell, was great now it's a dell with a high price tag.
Samsung: LOVE LOVE LOVE. Just like all of their other products they hit it out of the park with their laptops. I'm on my second for work (first got stolen) and I really wouldn't trade it for something else.
Compaq: No recent experience
Acer: Meh, I don't like them because I think they look cheap but they aren't a bad product.
ASUS: I love my Asus, but they can be big and bulky for what they have in them.
Lenovo: I think they are a bit big and chunky and they become dated quickly.
If you let me know what you need / want I can offer a few actual suggestions as well as a few places to order from.

I just linked the review to show what it looks like. I'll pulled up my properties for the specs that are on mine. It's 2 years old and still rockin'.

I see, and it is telling you that you have a 1GB harddrive? We have had a few of them at work and under high stress (they were used for our programmers) they lasted about a year which was less than stellar, I'm sure they last ok under normal use but I would expect more for the price tag.
How much are you looking to spend? What do you do with it?
I don't know....I guess I that would help, but cost isn't my first concern. I forgot that my pattern making software won't work on Windows 8, so whatever it requires is a moot point.
Trying to answer this without an i or k is a pita. ;p

Really though, why do you specify no Apple? Is it not going to be compatible with your other devices? No tech support? I resisted the hype for a long time, but they are such good machines.
ETA And I wouldn't have said this except that you mentioned no Windows 8.
ddn't say no Windows 8....just that my pattern software won't work with it. The support sn't there so need something new anyway.

OH well if thats the case then theres a lot of options!
My H is a IT professional, and his PC laptops are Samsung and HP. He used to have a Dell, but last time he was buying a computer, he didn't like something about the Dell. I'm not sure what. In any case, he has raved about his HP to lots of people, I'll find out what model it is.
BTW, he also has a MacBook, and uses that more than any of his other computers :-)

The Dell XPS's are halfway decent for someone that needs a really awesome machine (coders, etc.) but my Samsung is on the same level and cheaper. All of Dell's products have gone downhill in quality, they aren't using as high of quality components, their support is overseas, etc.
