Yes my MIL said it. She lives in the in law apt so we didn't exactly invite her over, she just came up. We had just gotten home from a trip so our suitcases were in the living room and the stuff that we bought, and the mail was on the coffee table etc..

i just couldn't believe she said it out loud.

I don't think suitcases and paraphernalia from a trip you just returned from constitutes a hoarder-type situation. And since it was MIL, I would brush it off and ignore it.

well, in the situation you described i wouldn't be embarrassed or start cleaning right away. and i'd also probably tell my MIL that she is welcome to help out if shes looking for something to do, otherwise i'm busy and don't have time to chat.
