After careful consideration of the work involved and taking into account my body's limitations, I've decided to sign up for a full marathon.
Lol, just kidding. Two friends signed up so I went "ME TOO!!!" and then registered 5 minutes later. Wtf am I thinking?? I ran the half last year and my knee felt like it was going to explode.
So I'm going to finally make an appointment with a sports doctor to see what's going on there. Does anyone know anything about good knee braces? Shoe recs? And I feel like I need to know about these gel things now.

Good luck! I would suggest going to a local running store, not some place like dicks, and getting fitted for shoes. They will watch you run and recommend the best shoes for your gait.
You first full. Prepare for the most intense love hate relationship of your life. Let me know what your doc says about your knee. If possible have him or a physical therapist do your gait analysis.

You can definitely do this.
Do you have a training plan already? If not, I highly recommend Hal Higdon's plans: www.halhigdon.com/. He was the editor of Runner's World forever, and knows his stuff. I've followed his novice plans for the half and full marathon, and had great races.
Ditto what everyone says about being fitted for running shoes - this is one area you'll want to throw down a chunk of change, but it's definitely worth it.
As for race fuel - I use honey packets. I cannot stomach that GU stuff, or any other fuels that you have to chew, because chewing and running is weird to me. But honey works great - it's instant energy!
