Do you have a blog? Are you a professional landscaper? (Maybe that was answered in another thread somewhere?)
Anyway, I just saw in the mulch thread over on MM that grass roots can disrupt tree growth. I always thought you mulched around trees just so you wouldn't have to get close to them with a mower. Last year DH and I planted 96 small hardwoods on our property. We have 5 acres that is mostly grassy meadow with a few mature trees here and there. There is no way in hell we are going to mulch 96 trees or dig the grass out from around them. Are we screwed? Or will they just grow a lot slower than the projected 1' per year? Is there anything we should do to help them out?

Thanks for the kind words! No blog, not a landscaper per se. I'm a Consulting Arborist. I specialize in landscape design, urban forestry, and forensics. NO WAY would I bother mulching or removing grass around 96 trees planted over 5 acres! Yikes. Yeah, it will impede their growth, and there may be some mortality. But you're not screwed, LOL. The fact that you planted in bulk makes up for a LOT. Hats off!
