Thanks for asking! We just came back from his regular dr. He basically confirmed that it was an anaphylactic shock. That first dose of Benadryl pretty much saved his life. I can't believe it. He still had a little swelling this morning around his eyes but they're back to normal now. We have an appointment with an allergist on Aug 1... so we'll see what exactly he's allergic to (in terms of ground nuts/tree nuts/etc).

Glad he is doing better today. I think you win mother of the year, not only for having Benadryl on hand but knowing to use it so quickly.
So scary! I am so sorry you had to go through that. What a scary experience. And you did amazing giving that benadryl right away. And I just saw your other post asking about giving pb. We gave it before she was one. My Dr told me it was fine to give everything but honey. I'm just so sorry about all of this. You are doing amazing!

I am totally buying Benadryl too, I didn't have any on hand (hubs and I don't have allergies so it's never around) when I gave S her first PB sandwich. Wow, I would have had to wait for paramedics for any medications, that is really scary. (((Hugs))) I am just in awe of what the three of you went through.
OMG Faevantastic, I just read your weekend posts and G's reaction to peanut butter all came flashing back to me. Hugs, lady! We have our allergist appointment next week -- I'll let you know how it goes. G's face looked similar; she was freaking out rather than looking lethargic. I think her reaction was slightly more mild, but still bad. So scary!
Also, try really hard not to beat yourself up about what happened. You weren't doing anything strange or horrible and many pedis advise trying peanut butter around 1 year old. I went through the exact same thing, though my DH was complaining about my reaction rather than my choosing to give peanut butter. I really really think in both our cases it's bc our DHs were really scared for their child and it's a coping mechanism. It's SO HARD to see your baby like that and feel so powerless.
Our pedi went ahead and gave us a prescription for an epi pen that we now carry with us, along with liquid Benadryl in the diaper bag. I've gotten a little more used to the idea of a peanut allergy and have started to check labels on foods and have told the server the one time we went out to eat since then about her allergy.
We were among the uninformed and didn't have Benadryl on hand at the time. Really good thinking giving it to E.
YES have benadryl on hand. We had to give it quickly for Luke's egg allergy too
Our allergist told us You can use liquid benadryl or the fast melts but not the chewables (they aren't fast enough). I keep liquid on hand at home and fastmelts in my bag but that's more because we have allergies and it's easier to make sure I have on hand.
If you are giving it for allergies (seasonal, pet, etc) they said give half the dose on the bottle. If it's for an allergic reaction- give the full dose even though it says 2 years and up. (but you can confirm that with your dr- that's just what our allergist told us to do)
It never even occurred to me that parents wouldn't have Benadryl on hand. I take my pharmacy knowledge for granted. It's not even just about potential food allergies, I'm sure you've all had to give antibiotics before and you can also have reactions to those. Everyone, stock up on Benadryl! lol
Faevantastic - did your pedi give you an rx for an epipen?

Beth, what's the active ingredient in Benedryl? We're wondering what the European equivalent is.

We don't have Benadryl, I just put it on the grocery list. I've actually never heard of it because nobody in my family has allergies.

Yes, everyone should have Benadryl on hand! You are all so sweet for giving me credit, but DH is prone to some food/environmental allergies (though never anaphylactic nor allergy to peanuts) so I knew about giving it quickly. I actually always carry some adult Benadryl tabs with me for DH. He also has epipen in his car. rxbeth - we did get rx for epipen jr for Evan. Daycare will keep one on hand too. I'm hoping we will never have to use one.

it's a pain but don't leave the epipen in the car! It has some temperature sensitivities.

I must've missed it when this happened. How's G thus far? Please keep me updated about her appt.
