Anything you want it to be!
This reminds me of something that popped up on my amazon suggestions awhile ago. It was just oddly shaped plastic thing and the point was the kid could pretend it was anything. I don't remember what it was called and I obviously didn't buy it.

It's an imaginative toy - toys that companies think promote certain types of imaginative play within kids. You give it to a small child and see what they come up with - turning it over to climb on, stuffing toys inside, climbing in and pretending it's a boat.
So, a very expensive (and slightly sturdier) cardboard box.

To a previous poster, Bilibo seats are very popular and inexpensive imaginative toys that are similar to this, just on a smaller scale. Maybe that's what you saw?
It's a way more expensive version of a bilibo (http://www.fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/kid_o/bilibo.cfm), which is a way more expensive version of a bowl.

My h likes to complain that his dad made him push a plank around in the dirt for fun. For some, reason giving my kid a bowl feels like the same idea. Lol. " when I ws a kid, my mom made me play with a BOWL"

I think I'm actually going to get one.
My H likes to pull out these clichés too - I give him a hard time for allegedly playing kick the can growing up
Well, this looks like an accident waiting to happen.
lol
These are great, though.
Timidly raises hand: we have one of these for the kid. The kid and I love it. H thinks our child will be seriously injured or maimed of he uses it. Right now it's hidden in a closet, its fate yet to be determined.

You spent $230 on this toy and its in the closet?
Isn't that more expensive than giving your kid first aid? And comparable to one dr's appointment if they hit their head?

Whoa there cowboy. If you look at the post I quoted, it's talking about the $25 Bilibo chair. Which was free with my Amazon cc points. I'm a poors, yo.
