Hubs has done it again Nearly demo'd our bathroom without a plan!! I'm very lucky to be married to such a hard worker but I sure didn't think we'd be renovating our master bathroom this summer. Pics: Our bedroom so you can kind of grasp what we've got going on... Going counterclockwise- Vanity shower and dh's closet Garden tub that we will be removing My closet and WC
The "plan" so far. (originally, the plan was just to remove the wallpaper and paint to match our bedroom. Yeeeaaaa.... we're doing a bit more)
Paint the walls to match the bedroom, including walls in the WC Remove the tub and install a custom built-in with drawers and a built-in hamper (2- one for lights and one for darks) Paint the current cabinets white (same color that the built-in will be) Most likely rip out the current tile and replace.... right? Bc otherwise the new built-in (where the tub is) would be waaaaay too deep.
I would really like a new vanity but not sure what the price would be. I would really love one that was a single height. Anyone have a ballpark price on a double vanity?
Also- can anyone see a good spot for our towels to hang after a shower? I really don't... right now we both have hooks inside our closets and that is where they go.
Dh is going to build the built-in. Should I have him build open shelves on either side for towels? Or is that just more to dust?
We would also really like to re-do our shower.... rip down the tile and start over.... but I'm not sure if I'm ready for that. On the other hand, might as well do it all at once, right??
Any thoughts? Dh left for a work trip and I have 4 days to come up with a plan. Yikes!
I agree with pp, I'd definitely do glass shower walls to open up that shower and get a double vanity. It seems like your h is handy, maybe he can build the vanity?
As far as double vanity prices, the sky is the limit. You can probably find something cheap at Costco or Home Depot or Overstock but if you want to configure it yourself, that will be $$$. If you do change out the vanity top, definitely go for widespread faucets. I like the pps' idea of changing the medicine cabinet wall to glass if there is no plumbing or electrical in the way.
I think when you change out the tub for the shallower built in, you may be able to put a hook on each side wall for towels, in front of the built in but I don't think you will fit an actual towel bar anywhere. Maybe on the back of the bathroom door? I don't think I would want open shelving for the towels but maybe glass fronted doors if you have a nice set that matches.
As far as gutting the shower, I think you and DH need to figure out a budget for the bathroom and then see how much you can do within that. We are in a similar situation with a bathroom "refresh" that is supposed to be new fixtures, vanity top, and lighting. I hate our bathtub with a passion and would love to swap that out too but we need to figure out if we can do it and still stick to how much we planned to spend.

Good thoughts. Thanks! I don't think we'll be knocking out the wall to the shower just bc I'm okay with it the way it is. Though of COURSE we will need a new shower door. Let me guess- that's $500-$1000 easy, right? Good grief, my hubs bit off more than he can chew!!!
I'm going to a local store to look at vanities today. I'll post back

Can I do some "thinking" out loud here? Tell me if I'm off my rocker. Budget will be $5-6K. This might not all be doable... but heck, dh has started so I've got to come up with something. This bathroom makes me swoon. I adore the vanity.
I priced out a double vanity yesterday... 86" *just* the vanity will be $1100. Price does not include countertop, mirror, faucets etc. It's pretty good quality with full extension drawers etc. Is that a good price? The cabinet style I am eyeing is Shaker. This is from a local store. I'm honestly fine w cultured marble as a countertop. Doesn't get any easier to clean and that's imp to me!
I think we'd be able to keep our current medicine cabinet and just paint and add a knob.
If we're going to do it, we might as well do it all, so I guess we'll retile the shower and obv replace the shower door with something much nicer. Anyone have a source for frameless shower doors? Standard size.
Pull the tub and dh will build a built-in. I can buy matching drawer and cabinet fronts from the place where we're buying the vanity so it will be uniform.
And of course retile the floor. I'm thinking rectangular, off-set.
wdyt? Doable? I'll prob. scour ebay/ikea for knobs, faucets, (uggg- new showerhead!!) and sconce. I'm thinking just one, in the center of the mirror kind of like that 2nd pic. Or might it get in the way and would one on each side be more practical?

Sorry to be a PW (in my own post, lol) BUT I now have a big question. It is all VERY doable within that budget if we do NOT change out the vanity. BUT- if we retile the floor, can we then change out the vanity in a year or two? ASSuming we go with a vanity of the same size and footprint? Or does it really need to be done all at once?
Why not pull the vanity and tile under it and put it back? Then you are set for the future for whatever shape/size you decide on. You can paint the current one to match your new built in and it won't be too bad to live with while you save up for a new vanity. ETA: jinx to nursecramer!
Genius!!
nursecramer- it didn't even occur to me to have dh build the vanity too!!! That's a great thought. Sadly, I don't totally trust his woodworking skills, but he could prob very easily build the "frame" and I could buy the cabinet and drawer fronts??? wdyt?
This would probably kill your budget, and you've probably already thought about it and nixed it, but...
I would install a new shower where the bathtub is. A giant, nice, spa-like shower. Kill the existing shower, simply because it seems awkward to me, and attach that space to the closet it is next to.

I like the other pps' ideas. I just thought I'd add that if you want more storage above the new built-in where the tub is, you could have a shelving unit built to sit on top of that, but leave the back open so the window light filters through. Like this set of shelves, only they would be shallow and start on the top of your new built-in.

@munkil- that was a thought a while back. But (and I know I'm not in the norm) I'm not a fan of massive showers... I don't think they look great unless they are sparkling clean with crystal clear glass. And that's hard to maintain!! Not a bad idea at all, but not the route we'll go. Plus, yeah, it would kill our budget
I would move the shower where the tub is to make it bigger and add more light and be more of a focal point in the bathroom with pretty tile. Where the shower is I would turn into a larger closet like what your husband has and make it one big closet space -- no one wants to see a clothes hamper in my opinion.
