My kids were playing on this kiddie carousel, you know the kind where you put in a coin and they go round? Outside the supermarket at the shops today. Well this woman put her toddler, not much bigger than Beau on this carousel. About 18 months old. There were 3 ride on spots so my kids and this little girl sat in them for ages having a good time. After a while I started looking around for this mother when I realised she wasn't there. There were lots of people around and I assumed she was standing behind me or nearby somewhere?
I was so livid and shouted at her about how irresponsible it was to leave her kid like that. She didn't seem concerned at all! She kept saying, oh well she wanted to stay there while I did the shopping!! She didn't seem nutso or crazy, she was well dressed and mid-30s.
Isn't that incredible?! It took me ages to calm down!!
Whaaaaa? I cant imagine!!! How easily it would have been for someone to just pretend to be her mom or dad and take her!!!! Gosh, that seriously freaks me out. I have a hard time leaving Camden in his room to go to the bathroom, let alone leave him in a public place with tons of people around!!

I....I....I can't even form thoughts. She is SO lucky that you were there to make sure nothing happened to her daughter. She should have been kissing the ground you walked on for doing that. From what you described, it unfortunately probably wasn't the first or last time that she'll do that.
Around here that kind of behavior would've meant a call to the police and a Child Protective Services report for neglect. Awful!
Well I guess you looked like a nice babysitter. What a fucking lunatwat!
I'm happy you were there but WTF?
Did I miss something? This is fracking hilarious!
Thanks! i was torn between lunatic and twat. I used to listen to a band called the Lunachicks so maybe it was buried in the nether regions of my cortex..
Oh and her English wasn't good, she was a recent immigrant from China. Fine, but you'd think in such a Populous country like China you'd be even more careful leaving your kid?!
and the little girl was so sweet. She would have gone with anyone

I can't believe she could actually justify that! I wouldn't leave my 8 year old unsupervised in public because of all the crazies that are around. Is there anything like child services there? They definitely would've been called here!
That is awful! I would have called Family Services in a heartbeat after I left that sweet girl with security. Do you have that option there?
I'm sure they have something like that.. When we left the store manager was talking to her, plus all these people were standing around. They had had about 10 employees running around the store to find her. They all went into an office after that, with the woman, so maybe they were calling the police.?

we're all freaking out wondering how the heck we'll EVER let our babies be in a toddler bed wandering around their own ROOM unsupervised, and this lady just ups and leaves her 18 month old in a crowd in front of a supermarket and heads off to do her shopping?!!

That makes my heart pound. Graham is the most precious blessing, thus why I do everything I can to protect him and keep him safe while he's in my care. I simply do not understand her actions.

WTF!!
The receptionist at a physical therapy office I went to got arrested for leaving her two kids in her car in the mall parking lot while she went to get her nails done. This was about three summers ago. I was shocked.
Ok, I am in no way condoning what she did at all. But she is from China. In China, this is acceptable (as far as I know) and happens frequently. She probably does not understand that this is not considered acceptable behavior in other parts of the world. Should she have done this? No. Does she need to be informed that this isn't acceptable? Yes. But try to have some understanding about where she is coming from.

This is kind of what I was thinking. Chinese culture is different. Is it possible she thought you were there to watch any kids that came by?

I took V to the library today and I panicked a little when she was out of sight while I was picking up the 20 books she knocked down. I can NOT imagine how that woman thought that was ok. Good for you for doing what was right. I'm so glad that little girl had you there.
