H and I want to get our finances under control and plan for the future. Truth be told, we have a savings and a checking account and that's it. I feel like we aren't planning well for retirement (I'm a teacher so my money goes into the teacher retirement fund and H just has SS). I know we need to do more, but truth be told, are pretty clueless about what we SHOULD be doing.
However, right now, we're just working on building up our savings account. We don't have as much in savings as I would like, so that has been our focus.
Knowing next to nothing about this, I'm assuming we'd have to pay for a financial adviser? Is this cost worth it, or are there other (free) resources we can read to get our retirement funds and funds in general in order? If we do see an adviser, is this someone we would find through our bank or elsewhere?
Like I said, we admittedly don't know a whole lot about this, and though we're young, we know we need to be doing more planning for our future than we are. Since I'm off work in the summer and we don't have anything big going on right now, I thought it'd be the perfect time to really focus on getting our finances in order over the next few months and get on the right track.
