And that is why you will not see me swimming around in a lake. This was at one of my sisters house. He ate both their ducks and was swimming very close to their dock, where my neices play. They also have 2 dogs.
(This nasty creature was killed legally by FWC. there was no poaching.) Sent from my HTC One X using proboards
I'm glad it's no longer by your sister's house, her kids, and their dogs. Their safety is obviously #1, but this still makes me sad.
Yeah, I'm not really a fan of killing things just for the sake of killing things.. but this was a little to close for comfort.
There have to be certain guidelines met before they will come & remove an alligator; in 2011 over 14k complaints were made, and just over 6k were actually removed.. It doesn't say whether or not they were killed, or just relocated.
Just found this;
When a nuisance alligator trapper removes an alligator, it becomes the property of the trapper. In most cases, the alligator is killed and processed for its hide and meat. Occasionally, a nuisance alligator is sold alive to an alligator farm, animal exhibit or zoo.
Nuisance alligator trappers work under contract with the FWC; they are not state employees. The sale of the alligator hide and meat is their primary compensation. This system results in tremendous savings to Florida’s taxpayers.

Yeah, I get that sometimes it's the only option. I would love to think that they could all be re-located and just dumped in the middle of the everglades somewhere, but I know once they become too comfortable around people, they're pretty much always a threat. Of course I'd rather them wind up at a farm, but I know that's not reality.
It's just the FL girl in me. They're as common as any other animal we could see here, so we probably have a different view of them then people who aren't exposed to them regularly. Generally speaking, I like alligators, but I wouldn't want one regularly that close to my home or loved ones either.

I think they might be the one thing that truly freaks me out; of course I'm accustomed to seeing them, but they are creepy critters.
I love sharks, and feel the way you feel about alligators towards sharks. I get so upset when I see people kill sharks just for fun. Like catch them & then shoot them; or catch them and keep them. Like, really? There is a super small chance they are actually going to clean a shark and eat it.
Several years ago there was a huge hammerhead down in Boca Grande; same guy caught it, tied a rope around it's tail, and drug it backwards to drown it. It was pregnant with a whole bunch of pups. It seriously broke my heart. Hammerheads are my favorite.

This is why I hate lakes. All lakes. There's baaaaaad things in there, man. And my family makes fun of me. *harumph* I'm totally showing them this post.
As for the lake thing though, do you guys ever watch River Monsters on Animal Planet? Holy crap, I'll never swim in another lake or river ever again, there are some crazy ass creatures in there!

IMO many shark species should be added to the Endangered and Threatened list. That would at least stop the sport fishing in the US.
State DCNR just killed a 10 ft gator a couple of weeks ago at a city park on the Bay (I live in south Alabama). The state had to take care of the gator because had eaten a 65 lb yellow lab. As in, all they found left was some fur and the dog's collar. It's a park where a lot of people walk their dogs and let their kids wade. Or at least they used to.

I've watched it a few times; that guy is crazy - Doesn't that take place in another country? Maybe i'm thinking of the wrong show.. BUT STILL.. newp.

This was the 2nd gator taken out of this lake in a matter of months. Some friends of mine had one removed from by their house - I don't know if it was killed, or just removed.
As for sharks; I admit that I love catching sharks, but we never bring them on the boat, unless they are super small where we can take the hook out then we release. We've gone fishing specifically for sharks a few times, but we don't keep them. I just love the fight. 99% of the time, we never even see the shark.
I could die happy if I ever caught a hammerhead! They are just so amazing. I could sit for hours and watch youtube videos for people fishing and then a big ass hammerhead comes up & eats the fish of their line.. awesome. lol.. and now ya'll know how insane I really am. I hope when DH gets his boat finished we can go to Boca Grande and see a hammerhead.. oh man, that would be awesome.
who knows what I even had on the line here - but it was fun, and we never even saw it. It broke the line before we got it to the boat.

Yeah, sadly there are some cases like this where it just has to happen. Although I do wish there was some safe way to just re-locate it. The gator is just being a gator after all....in it's natural habitat that WE have inserted ourselves in, but no...it can't be left there in a place where people's pets and children are. That's obviously, as evidenced by that poor lab , a very dangerous situation.

I am trying to tell myself that at least marine biologists were able to learn some things about a hammerhead's ability to carry that many babies at once...because otherwise I'm enraged and want to kick that guys ass, and I don't want my rage to compel Junior to come out. But WTF DUDE?!
And yeah, no swimming in lakes in FL for me either. Nope. No way no how.
I wish I was on my computer at home. I have a great picture of DH floating in the water behind a canoe, with two alligators on the bank behind him. lol

nope. LOL. Some of our friends go canoeing down the Ocklawaha River.. nope, not me. I know my fear is ridiculous, since i'll jump into the ocean with no problems .. but alligators man, nope.

OMG, that thing is huge! Yikes!
I'm right there with ya. There are millions of creepy things in the ocean and I have no problem swimming in there, but lakes really gross me out. DH showed me a picture on his iPhone a few weeks ago....of two huge black water snakes he saw coiled up on the banks of our lake. I'm just as done as you now, lol.

Yes, usually it's in Africa or South America somewhere, but I've seen several where he has been in the U.S.!

nope. DH's cousin just posted this on her instagram. She's in FL. I'm not sure if she took this or if it's even real.. but nope. In case you can't tell, it's a gator with a deer.
this just makes me laugh. Obviously it's better than a dog, but hooooly shit. a whole deer.

That picture was circling around years ago. I can't remember if it was ever verified as real or not, but it's probably possible. There are some HUGE alligators in the south. I should point out what that deer would look like if a shark had it....but I know we all have different things that set us off. lol
One critter I don't have to worry about! Glad your family is safe.
This reminds me of the wolf issue in Minnesota - mostly much further North than I where live. They opened up a wolf hunt this year with a small number of permits per region because they are getting more numerous, and close to people, livestock, baby calves and lambs, etc.
There is definitely mixed feelings and controversy about killing wolves in MN.
