We have 4 Japanese Maples that were planted in the middle of our back yard (they were there when we moved in). I've often thought they were oddly placed and take up a lot of room that would be more usable without the trees. Is there any way to move these? How big is too big to transplant? Is this the sort of thing I could post on a local board and people would want to come and take this tree? I told you this is possibly crazy! Ha!

I've seen 50' tall trees moved. There are two things that you should carefully consider: 1. the expertise of the tree mover- can they do it and not kill the tree? Have they done this before? 2. the cost- is it going to be worth it to you? What if it costs several thousand dollars? Wouldn't you rather use that money for something else, like a new car? There are companies that specialize in this. If the tree is big, it will be expensive. Here's some guys moving a large Japanese maple.

Hmm, good thoughts. Thanks, treedimensional . I do have a friend who is an arborist - some sort of certified one, I remember when he got new business cards after passing some sort of big test/large certification and it having a special number on it - so I'd imagine he can give a little more insight. We have about 50 trees on our acre of property and he's always asking if we want him to advise.
If it is cost-prohibitive and I still don't want them, is it bad tree karma to just take them down? I obviously say that a bit tongue-in-cheek, but these trees can't be that old b/c they're not that large (the trunks are probably 5" only). Will it be crazy to remove them?
