We have a gas fireplace that does not have fixed panels in front of it. It was once a wood burning fireplace. I would call your local gas company and see if they will come out to give you a quote on installing gas logs and give you options on what can be installed.

Just coming in to vote wood burning - though gas might be cheaper in your situation. I love the crackle of wood burning fireplaces and the smell. I hate the smell of a gas fireplace.

We have a wood burning fireplace with a gas starter. We haven't actually used it yet (new-to-us house), and I'm not really sure if we will find the gas starter helpful (I probably wouldn't have paid for one), but it seems like the best of both worlds to me in theory. We will be installing a blower and glass doors later this summer. It won't be as efficient as a closed unit or Franklin stove, but I think it makes a good trade off between utility, aesthetics, and efficiency.
