Our contractor has his guys here clearing out my studio space, prepping for the work to start as soon as the permit is issued.
DH was just about to set up a bagster for them to use, when the guys came by for regular trash pickup. They made a comment about the company that picks up the bagster (not them) and asked DH and our contractor's guys what we were getting rid of, and why didn't we just have them take our stuff. They will take up to 15 bags of stuff on a regular pick up, but we had so much weird/big stuff that we figured a bagster or dumpster was the way to go.... most of our stuff wouldn't fit in a bag without it being more work.
One guy and DH started talking about the architecture of our house, while the guys talked to the other trash man and next thing you know, the garbage truck is backing into my yard, almost up to the front door.
They took all of the carpeting, padding, old trim, doors, a bathroom sink, and random construction debris that had filled the space. The guys were doing demo as fast as they could so that they could get it in truck. It was crazy.
We gave them some money and a couple of bottles of water, but not enough considering that they saved us $$$.
The contractor's son was in shock...he has the other company at his house, and they are really picky about what they will take, and they charge a fortune. His brother in law, who was here too, has the same company we do and was gloating. lol
It was nice to have something so nice happen in a week that has been nothing but frustrating, and on a day when I woke up with a killer headache. Hopefully things will continue on a positive trend.
As a kid, I never understood why my dad left xmas gifts for the garbage men - as a homeowner - you better believe I butter those guys up as much as possible!

I didn't understand that either, until now. The service we had in CA was much different, and was really expensive. Not remotely personal.
Ours here is paid with our taxes and the annual charge is less than we paid for two months of service in CA. I did like that we had such a great recycling program where we were though, (seriously amazing, leader in the field, recycled everything), and it does bother me that they don't discourage trash here like they did in CA.. It is convenient, but seems so wrong to me.
That's awesome! We have great garbage and recycling guys too. They will take anything as long as we break it down into small enough parts. We also try to spread out what we put out there after a demo so it's not all at once. We give them presents around the holidays and sometimes leave baked goods at other times of the year when we've been demoing.

It's kind of weird , but I love our waste management people. The people are always super helpful on the phone in scheduling large item pickups (we get 1 free large item pickup a year). They always take the time to discuss what types of large items will be recycled in which ways - plus the regular recycling is pretty good. I really like the curbside compost pickup too - and it translates into really cheap compost available from the county. Our garbage bill isn't too bad, they give discounts if you can manage with only a tiny little can (really fits only 1.5 bags of trash) so i like that they have incentives to encourage people to make less trash.

I did love ours out there there too. The office people were great, the community education people were phenomenal, but the people who picked up the trash were kind of sloppy and not remotely helpful. The recycling people/yard waste and regular recycling were great, and they picked up extra even though we had huge bins for those. We had one of the small trash bins...we were the trendsetters/recycling nazis in our old neighborhood.
Our old county's waste management was actually a program that was a model for many municipalities throughout the country. It was incredibly progressive.....unlike here. I feel like I stepped back in time. lol
love that! our garbage people have been very accommodating of our projects and demo. a couple times when we forgot to put that can out they've gotten it from where we keep it by the garage. I need to give them a gift.
