I was a dirty lurker on the married life board just now and came across a tampon flushing thread. Um...I never knew that flushing them was bad... (huh)
I don't use tampons often because my periods are often so light that it's overkill, but I flush them when I do. After seeing that, though, I'll be putting them in the trash. Plumbing problems get expensive, yo!

I might not be flushing them anymore...there were so many clog stories on ML. .Scary.

We are on septic, so definitely have to throw away. It's actually one of the big reasons I switched to a diva cup. I find it much less disgusting than wrapping up a tampon.

Yes, but I hear in houses with spetic you aren't supposed to?
I also put a tampax pearl ultra in the toilet and let it sit overnight becaues it was clean and i didn't want to waste a flush. Next morning, almost all the toilet water was gone....absorbed by the tamp.

I picked "special" because I don't flush them at work because we have small pipes and have had to have plumbers snake them way too often to get tampons out. At home, I flush, flush, flush!
Hmm...I always flushed them but am now living in a house with a septic system. After reading this, I definitely should be throwing them away. Luckily I've only had 2 periods here so hopefully I haven't done irreparable damage...

I always flushed, until recently. First problem was I would clog the toilet with the tampon. Then I started flushing twice, once with just the tampon, then next with the toilet paper. But the toilet was STILL CLOGGING. Ahhhh, one day I clogged two of the three toilets in my house. So now although it grosses me out, I throw them away. Well and hey, thats a perk of pregnancy, no tampons for a while!
I used to flush them all the time, but my husband works for a wholesale plumbing company and says that's a no no. They aren't made to go into the system. Now I flush every so often and feel guilty.
No way!! You cannot flush them it will ruin your septic!! My mom put the fear of God in me not to flush them when I was younger so I never do. Just wrap them all up in tp and throw them away.

This. I grew up in an old Victorian house, and although we didn't have a septic tank, my mom would tell me NEVER put anything other than tp in the toilet because it will clog the old pipes. So I have always (and continue to) wrap it in toilet paper and throw it in the trash.
I don't even flush them when I am out in a public restroom....I didn't know people DID flush them.
I've always lived in modern homes on city sewer and always flushed. We're considering moving to a house with a septic...DH was very clear that I would no longer be able to flush...I think I might switch to the Diva cup if that happens.

I always thought flushing them was a huuuge no no!! I am fascinated by how many of you flush them!!!
I don't really need them too much these days-mirena makes my periods pretty light-but I think I'd be too scared to start flushing. I'd hate to be in the same room as the apartment maintenance man as he snakes out a million bloody tampons. Gross.
